I don't think there is anything wrong w/ getting your name for a tat. Everyone tries to tell you it's dumb, or you'll regret it. I have my name in my ankle piece and I like it. I guess I figure better your own name then someone else's name any day of the week.

Definitely talk to the artist -- they'll probably have hundreds if not thousands of samples on the wall, plus tat magazines and so on. Don't let him or her talk you into more than you are willing to pay though, and remember it's your body and you have to live with it for awhile. I'm not trying to talk you out of it (I've got 2, my wife has 3), but just know what you're doing and paying before you get there.
Have fun! They're addicting as all hell -- one is never enough!

Ultimately you need to discuss what you want with your artist....If you want to get your name there are probably different things your artist can design to make it fit your personality. My artist knows me well enough that all I need to do is go in and tell her what I'm thinking about and she can draw it up for me so that it suits me. So....in answer to your question talk to your tattoo artist but definately go in with an idea of what you want and where you want it because you are the one that will sport it for eternity ;)

For my first tattoo, I wanted something that symbolizes something I am interested in. So Saturday I got my zodiac symbol(leo) on my lower hip. Its fairly small which is what I wanted. I figure its something I am very interested in and will not regret. Find out what your really interested in. I also LOVE turtles, so my next one will be a little turtle on my back :)

don't get your name. seriously. my name was my first tattoo and it has since been covered up. looking back it seems like people who get their names get it just because they want a tattoo but they don't know what they want. it's dumb. you're not likely to forget who you are and you ARE likely to hate the tattoo when you get older. think of something better. look at other tattoos and try to get something that you relate to, something that means something to you. and anytime you're not sure (even a little bit) about what to get... DON'T get it. it's important that you know that you know that you know what you want because it's so permanent. the rest of your life may not seem feasable right now but as you get older it does.

If you want words don't get your name... pick a saying or a phrase that you have a connection to...
Chances are that you would get the tat somewhere that you and only you would see it... you don't need to be reminded of what your name is.
also, check with the artist to see if they know how to do scrolling... or old english block letters or something...

for one thing where are you going to put your tattoo ? make sure that it is a design that you really like not something that you'll have for a year then get sick of it, once you have it its there forever, or until you have alot of money to get rid of it! good luck on your choices !

Don't get your name, that's retarded. Your tattoo artist can help you with everything. You dont need to waste your time on here.
