Shocked yes insane a little, there are some really cruel story and in some story you just has to ask why, all the sad ending and fatality left and right, so many sad story, and its supposed to be a book to better your life and the life of those around you. But still is one the best book a ever read.

I have actually read it from cover to cover. I wouldn't call it insane, but I did find inconsistencies. I also interpreted things differently from my christian bible study group. But, then again, I have a tendency to interpret a lot of things differently than others. In my experience each group focuses on a verse or two, or a book or two and use the rest to uphold what they believe. Its nearly impossible to literally believe the entire book. I do find it interesting as a study of humanity and beliefs. Just as I find Greek and Roman mythology interesting. I haven't yet read other spiritual or religious texts, so my opinions are somewhat limited.
To me, all writing is relevant to what was/is going on at the time, making it a good sociological tool.

I have read it and it is the most awe-inspiring thing I have ever read. What is shocking and insane is the things that go on in the world and much of what is in the Bible is just recordings of things that were going on in the world at that time and even predictions of things to come.

Having read it multiple times, I have found nothing either shocking or insane within it. Or at least not anything done by God. Some of the things that humans who disobey him do is both shocking and insane. But then, what do expect when you reject the source of all wisdom.

The grace of God is the expression of His goodness toward the undeserving. Grace means unmerited favor, and can be expressed by the acrostic "God's Riches at Christ's Expense." This grace is the basis of our salvation. In Salvation, men who deserve hell obtain heaven.
The shocking and insane men in it deserved hell but because they believed in Jesus obtained heaven.
We need to remember that we are saved, given the Holy Spirit, and allowed to serve God - by His grace. God is a Holy and Righteous God that abhores sin. Throughout Scripture men can come to realize that God is a Judge. And to be saved, man must trust Christ alone for his salvation.
Absolutely the greatest book ever written. His Story - history!

I have read it four times cover to cover. I wouldn't label it insane, but I would say that it's hardly a great source from which to derive morality.

I have read the Bible, I was not shocked, and I did not label it 'insane'
Edit:
In the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”

I have done much more than just read the bible, I believe the Bible, because it points to my Savior, Jesus Christ.

Maybe not, but you would discover that what the Bible says, and what is practiced in quite a number of churches does not jive.

Considering the society we live in, I could see how living a life like Jesus did would seem abnormal.
But it's the life I strive for. Rob Bell has a great book on the topic, called Velvet Elvis.
