My mum had a fall and hurt hurself and was very poorly. She died after 6 weeks. There were various causes of death but the primal number one cause was mrsa. Has anyone else claimed a hospital for this?

as tragic as it is, it could be that your mother was carrying the MRSA even before she was addmitted to hospital. its only when youre ill, and the immune system is weakened that is can prove fatal. It would be hard to prove whether or not your mother contracted it from the hospital. however, what you can do is make a formal complaint with the hospital, and they will be able to launch an investigation into it for you.

good luck, and im sorry about your loss.xxxx

I am sorry to hear that you have lost your Mum. I lost mine 2 years ago, so I know how you feel.

Making a claim against the hospital will not put things right, even if it is their fault. Remember that any money you get, and any court costs which they incur will reduce the money they have to treat other patients, and will of course reduce the money they have to put in measures to stamp out mrsa. The NHS is paid for by all of us, so you will be in effect claiming from yourself.

Let's not let the claim culture of America infect the UK any more than it already has.

If you think that the cleanliness of the hospital could be improved then maybe you can write to your mp, or ask to see someone in hospital management etc., or start a campaign to get the hospital cleaned up. I'm sure your Mum would prefer you to do something constructive like that.

There is a chance that your Mum may have had Community MRSA prior to her fall. See if you can contact PALS at the hospital and have a chat with them. Try to stay calm this will be an emotional time for you. Have a look at a couple of web sites so that you understand the condition before speaking to people. Try www.medicinenet.com it is an American site I think.

Sad though this story is, for all you know, the MRSA bug which killed your mother was carried into her hospital ward by you yourself. MRSA is widespread in the community. Many of us are carriers. So no, you cannot claim. Unless you can prove 100% that you did not pass on the bug to your mother and that the hospital was negligent.

If you are willing to spend a lot of time and money on it, do it. Not just because of the money or to be compensated for your suffering, but as a way for the hospital to take action, so it won't happen again.
If your mom passed due to MRSA and it is clearly stated on her death certificate, you may have a case, but you should ask a lawyer.
MRSA is found mostly in hospitals, and if she didn't have an open wound, it might have to do with her stay there, and not carrying it herself (or you).

You need to get your mother's medical records---if you are listed as her next-of-kin. Then you need to take them to a lawyer and see if you even have a case. You have to have proof that she got the MRSA in the hospital.
