Where I'm from, it's kind of a honorific. You get your best friend or favorite relative to be your child's godparent. In theory, your godparents are supposed to see to your child's spiritual development along with the child's parents.

I'm from heavily Roman Catholic SW Louisiana. There, it's basically just a way to have a favorite aunt/uncle and to get more presents at Christmas and for your birthday.

A godfather or godmother is assigned to a baby by their parents at their baptism or christening (a Christian ceremony welcoming a baby as a member of the church). The godparents are usually family members (such as the baby's uncle) or close trusted friends or other church members. The godparents are expected to supervise the child's religious upbringing if the parents are unable to do so. In some traditions and rare cases, the godparents are asked to raise the child if the parents die.

"The Godfather" was also a popular movie trilogy about the Mafia (the Italian mob) in America, and has come to be a term for the head of the Mafia.

hi there....God father (usually a married man n so God mother too) share the responsibility of educating their God child. The God parents are usually a relative or a close family friend whom the parents of the child has chosen n entrusted to help the child grow spiritually. The God parents will be present at the 'Babtism' ceremony n several other religious ceremonies as the child grows. The God parents' children will b God sisters or brothers to the chosen child. Hope i answered your question.
