i just started looking in the religion and spirituality section of YA and i am shocked at how people trash Christians and everything they believe in. Its one thing to disagree with them but its another to be disrespectful. Does anyone have a reason to justify this?

One good reason is because some fundamentalist trashed their beliefs first.

It's like "IS NOT!" "IS TOO!" "IS NOT!" "IS TOO!"

It's very mature in here, you see.

I agree that hateful words have no place in this forum, but it is going to happen. I see it coming from people with all kinds of faiths, or those with no faith. There are good and bad in every sect, and a forum like this is where people can get the most hateful, because they are hiding behind a computer screen. There really is no justification for it, but it is just one of those facts of life.

Edit- Jenae, it depends on the question being asked. Sometimes it can be expressed as an opinion (though I don't believe that Christians have the right to condemn anyone to hell). Other times, people who post those things are just seeking to promote their agenda.

The answer is, there is no way to justify trashing other people's beliefs. I'm a Catholic myself, but I think that no one should be trashing anyone, even if they're an athiest. This section is supposed to be for people who want to learn about religions and spirituality, not to try and offend other people.

The trash talk and disrespect run on all sides of the 'conflict'. The majority of the disparaging remarks from both religious and non-religious posters are a result of people who have at best a tenuous grasp of their own religions concepts, or a misplaced desire to cause unrest among a group that a small minority cause to seem acrimonious.

Some people do not like Christians. There's really no other way of putting it. You also have to keep in mind one important thing -- this is yahoo. People will talk a tough game on here sometimes when in reality, they don't act like that at all. Other times -- you have to keep in mind that some of it happens to bne coming from younger people that are very immature. One other thing to think about -- people trash what they do not completely understand.

Believe me, it's only in response to *being* trashed. People of differing beliefs have had to listen to Christians say things like "I can't wait to see the look on your face when you stand before God and he sends you to Hell", and "you only choose to not believe in God so you can just go out and have sex with whoever you want and live your life with no morals and have no one to answer to", and other things like that. Some of the Christians on here are very cool, and if you're cool, then you won't have people trashing you. Some of the other Christians on here dish it out worse than anyone.
Yes, sometimes people jump the gun and post rude answers when they don't need to, but usually that's due to them getting overly defensive. We just need to all try our best to not be rude when it's not called for.

Sad, isn't it? Even if your beliefs are different, you should respect their right to believe. After all, this is America and we are supposed to have freedom of religion. Religion is personal. No two people have the same identical beliefs, even within the same religion. To trash anyone else's religion, at least to me, is not at all spiritual and I doubt that anyone's God (or "higher power") would approve of such negativity.

It is a 2 way street. Christians should be able to set examples and hold the upper hand. A true christian should not hate. I am christian and I'm surprised at what is said about my beliefs...but at the same time I read some of the comments that a christian has left and it makes me drop my jaw.
WE NEED TO LEARN TO COEXIST.
Not sure how old you are but the world is full of uneducated not patient people who can not hold their tongue in a civilized matter.

I tried to stay above it; I really tried.

I just get tired of seeing some Christians being rude, arrogant, dishonest and insulting. I like to think that I still respond with more class than they (when I'm not being outright sarcastic, at least), but who am I to judge?

I beleive in respect and tolerance (in real life, even if I've given up here). I've lost track of the thumbs-down I've gotten by politely suggesting Christians could do better in this regard.

ADDED:
Thank you, Gail, for providing me with a concrete example:
"What they don't understand is that it is not us who are judging, it's the word of God. The word has already judged them."

Ouch!
What is the difference between god and Gail? god doesn't think she is Gail, apparently.

there is no good reason - we all believe in what we believe in and whoever thinks their religion or belief system is better than someone else's is a an idiot. I am christian and do not think I am better. Insult my religion, go ahead.....you make yourself look like a jerk. If someone starts insulting a religion, be prepared for backlash.

There is no justification for one person to lowrate another and I have seen it on both sides. The bible speaks of some people being blinded to the truth because they would not believe it anyway but still should be prayed for and treated nicely. The old saying goes "You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinagar"
