I have a bad chest cold that has caused my voice to become weak and hoarse. Unfortuantely as a teacher, I am forced to talk all day and often raise my voice at my second graders. Is it okay to do this or will it cause permanent damage overtime?

It depends. Even when you are well raising your voice too much in the wrong way can damage your voice. Maybe it's time to call in sick and let a sub handle your class, since it seems that you're not really capable of doing the job right now. If you are that sick you run the risk of exposing some of your coworkers or students to the same illness you have.

My Mother in Law is a singing teacher, She and her students swear that if you take a tomato and slightly roast it directly over an open burner flame or in a frying pan, just enough to slightly loosen the skin from the rest of the tomato, and then let it cool until you can safely apply it like a poultice on your throat. Then cover it up with a kitchen towel or some other piece of cloth and let it remain on for at least twenty minutes. Plenty of water is another thing you need when a throat is hoarse and above all, be careful because nose ear and throat doctors are full of patients who have damaged their vocal chords just by indiscriminate yelling and cheering. Some patients have developed growths and polyps on their vocal chords when they do that once too often.

It likely would not cause damage but there is a slight chance. Even whispering when you have a hoarse voice can take a toll on it. I would rest up and try to keep any talking to a minimum.
