Do you think that religion is %99 pure stupidity mixed with one part lying? Do you want to tell that to religious people whenever they're asked to "respect" their faith?
or do you by contrast, believe that religion is more complicated than the stupidity and that we should at least make an effort to get along with religious people?

Personally, I don't care about religion. Whatever people believe in has no effect on me. Unlike a lot of whiney atheists out there I'm not offended by what's in the pledge or what's in front of a courthouse or what's on the dollar bill because it means nothing to me. I don't disrespect people by talking down on their beliefs or anything of the sort. I'm a peace loving person who gets along with anybody. Some of my closet friends and family members are Christians and I love them to death so I have no issues with religious people at all. As long as no serious religious laws are passed that could cause some discrimination against me I'm cool with everything and everybody.

I don't "believe" religious people or "respect" their faith. What I do (speaking as someone who isn't an atheist at all) is respect and acknowledge that the religious people believe what they do for a reason, and that they are being entirely honest when they say that they believe something because of an encounter they had rather than on intellectual grounds. Though I do completely disagree with their interpretation of what they think this encounter was, particularly in the light of the decisions their understanding would lead them to make.

So if you want to classify me, you could say I behave nicely to them until they wish to assert details, at which point I calmly (and arguably cruelly) point out the flaws of their assertions (without ever questioning their own experiences).

nice atheist :-)

The only religious people I have a problem with are those who want to convert me, but not all are that way, and I usually get along fine with religious people and respect their faith, because it's really their business what they believe. I mean I don't want others to preach to me, so why should I try to "preach" atheism?

And I don't think that religion is always stupid. Yeah, creationist Evangelical Christians who believe that those who don't believe what they do will go to hell are really not the smartest people, but I have to say again that not all religious people are that way!

I am a nice person. I respect other people what ever their beliefs are. I just happen to be an atheist. I think that religious people should all examine this thing called 'faith' which turns out to be no more then believing something without any reason or evidence, but merely because someone tells to you to believe it.

It is not stupidity, it is gullibility mixed with the desire to belong to something and believe in something. I respect anyone that seriously believes because they personally researched both sides of the argument before choosing a side. I was a gullible christian until I decided that following christianity was just like following your friends that had drugs, it was just out of peer pressure. I followed because everybody else I knew did. I took 2 years to research many religions (it started with christianity, but I also looked at islam, buddhism, and even wicca) and atheism. Through my studies I realized that I had come to the conclusion that all religions were created by man, not man created by god. However, if someone else searches too and needs god, I respect them a lot more than a blind follower.

I think I'm nice. Others may disagree.

I think religion is stupid. I think people are smart.

I don't respect other people's faith, but I do respect other people and their right to hold their faith.

I understand that there are very valid reasons for being religious. I also understand that none of those reasons are sound. There is an important difference between those two words.

I'm a nice atheist.

But I do think religion is 75% stupidity, 24% lying and about 1% truth. I make an effort to get along with people, but I have no respect for their stupid beliefs.

I'm a nice person. I don't know what will happen when I die and I don't really care because the most likely outcome will be that I am simply gone and won't be aware of anything. I am open to all possibilities, I will rule nothing out completely, but the likelihood that a supposedly loving god would torture me for eternity for not believing in him sounds very far fetched.

To answer your immediate question, I'm a mean atheist. I think all religion is wrong. It's a huge starter of war and there's no evidence at all to support any of the characters or events. I get so angry when people approach me in the street and try to convince me that their religion is the one and only true religion in this world when no evidence supports any of what's in their bible. If they want any respect from atheists, they ought to leave us well alone as we just get angry and retaliate against them (sometimes bringing avid religious people to tears, we don't want to do that as it's not nice, but they ought to respect us rather than persue us). I believe we all ought to just believe in ourselves as we are real.
