Evan and GSXR are basically right.
It means you can stay on your sofa all day and all night eating holy bonbons and thinking about how wonderful it is that you believe all the right things, but if you don't DO anything to make the world a better place and spread God's love, then your faith is pretty worthless.

Well my faith in God would be dead if I put my faith in God and God never came through. However I have had prophetic words come to pass and seen God do many miracles in my life as well as my parents and siblings so by these works my faith has grown from a mustard seed to a well rooted tree that is not easily shaken.
It could also mean that say faith in God with out showing love to your bother makes everything fruitless. So as Christians we should be seeking to put knowledge to action. So when I feel God is leading me to do something I try to do it even some times when it doesn't make sense. As long as it isn't against what what Jesus would do from what I know of the Bible.

I'd like to think that it is applicable to any religion. Faith in your belief system is akin to mirroring the actions of the founders or inspirations of those religions. So the compassion and humanity of the Buddha or Christ should be imitated by their followers. Certainly Jesus said "What-so ever you do to the least of my brother...". In other words doing good to a brother is doing good to God or to the universe entirely. The Hebrew's say when you save the life of one person you save the life of the entire world.
So actions are a major part of faith. Sitting around in smug self righteousness casting judgment about the world around you is not faith. It is arrogance.

There is a very strong connection between Faith and works. Faith(trust,a thought) leads works(action). Yesone can have the thought and not get the action done; but there should be minimal time delay difference between them presently.

The natural outpouring of a life of Faith is righteous works. They are the fruit that is borne from a "good tree". Jesus said, Good trees bear good fruit. Righteous works are the natural fruit of Faith and are the evidence of it. No Righteous works = No evidence of Faith.
In order for anything to grow, it must be alive. If one's Faith is dead (not growing) the evidence of that fact is a lack of Righteous works (fruit).

It means that while faith is good and important to have, real progress is not likely to occur unless you back up your faith with tangible effort. If you want results, you are far more likely to receive it if you work for it.
If I have cancer and it is in its beginning and manageable phase, I could (and would) pray; but adding medical advice and treatments to those prayers is far more likely to get me a remission or cure than if I only prayed. Prayer is incredibly effective, but often answers come in a physical form like doctors and hospitals whom God has blessed with facility and knowledge to deal with life's problems. Most modern knowledge has not come without God's direction and blessing.

It means exactly what it says! One cannot have faith and serve God without PROVING themselves through the work they do IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, not just so their fellow man can be satisfied with them and pat them on the back and welcome them as a member of the church. Also, one cannot simply do all the good deeds they can do WITHOUT obedience to God's salvation plan, for to go against it would make it appear as if we're saying to God we didn't need Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and that our morality through our common decency would be enough to get into Heaven!

numerologically
enemies of the God=police=hells angels=don=rebel
friends of the God=good people
thus i am not saying the enemies of the God are bad but faith without works means to become friends of the God you must cease being enemies of the God and become Good people.
faith without works means until you change who you consider your authorities and become good people, faith is dead along with the goodness that can come from it.

"Works" is active faith. Active faith is the natural outward flow of your faith. If your faith brings forth no action it is dead because it stops with you and does not grow.

Jon M and the Reverend are right.
Regardless of the protestant and catholic mudslinging in the last hour or so, you need both perhaps not for salvation but to be a growing believer.
I'd rather be a good atheist with an internal set of morals.
