My parents would say, "do you want me to warm your hiney with the hairbrush?"
I always felt like answering "sure, go ahead and see if I care!" But I knew it would be stupid of me.

I always wondered that too. I was always tempted to be a smart *** and say "yes" to my parents, but of course that would get me spanked for a smart mouth. Really, it's just a warning that spanking is coming if they don't shape up.

It's to let the kids know that they have pushed the boundaries just a little too far and it's time to stop NOW. Just like when parents count. When we're in public, I ask my kids if we need to make a trip to the bathroom, but they know if we go in, only one of us is going to come out happy. Generally I don't have to back it up because we've done it enough that they know I'm serious. I have friends who make the threat then don't reinforce it so it's meaningless.

because they try to scare you into behaving
but if you were going to get a spanken they wouldn't ask
they would just do it
so next time call their bluff

It is a ploy by us parents to warn you of the possibility that you can get spanked for your current horrible behavior.

Well, it seems to be more of an ultimatum: Either you do what I said or you'll get a spanking.

haha they say that to warn them that if they act poorly the will get hit. personally i don't like it when parents hit their children. sometimes it can have a negative effect on the child's psyche.
