I remember skipping school when I was a sophomore in high school to attend the grand opening of what was then called "EPCOT Center." I remember Spaceship Earth not working at all, and I remember the first rain shower flooding the concrete walkways. I remember only five pavilions in Future World, and nine countries in World Showcase Lagoon. Nevertheless, it was a really cool place to explore. Do you have any memories of opening day?

Actually, the Walt Disney Company has changed the name of the park from EPCOT Center (where "EPCOT" was an acronym) to "Epcot" which is now a word and only the first letter is capitalized. I *do* realize that I made a grammatical mistake by typing "Epcot Center" in my question. It should have either been "EPCOT Center" or "Epcot."

Thanks.

I wasn't there opening day -- but I was there about a month before, for Cast Member family preview, sometime around Labor Day...

I was amazed -- the place looked great, didn't have many problems on the attractions.

What was odd, though, was that most of the shrubs, trees, etc. had yet to be planted, so it was very 'barren' at the time we were there.

I still remember climbing up on those rocks out in front of the Canada pavilion for a family photo -- can't do that these days!

Correct, it was called EPCOT Center when opened, then changed to Epcot (I believe the story behind that is an acronym can't be trademarked).

I went to Orlando with my family not long after Epcot opened and I wasn't interested in it. It looked boring for me. So my dad went by himself. It wasn't until a couple of years ago did I go there for the first time. I love the different countries' buildings, foods and items to buy. Some of the stuff looks a little outdated and should be changed.. like that building with nothing in it but bathrooms over by that crooked walkway. The new Nemo ride was in my opinion the most boring ride they had, though the Three Caballeros (sp?) in the Mexico exhibit needs some help.

I wasn't there for opening day, but was there to experience EPCOT's first year. I remember being blown away by all the pavilions. Years later, I am just as amazed by what I see and experience. EPCOT may not be what Walt envisioned, but it is good.

If you're going to spell EPCOT, please do so with caps everytime. :)

I have no memories of opening day itself, only that it wasn't what Walt intended it to be. And it's been downhill from Walt intended ever since he kicked the bucket.
