Ice cream helps sooth a sore throat, but if it is combined with a bad chest or cold symptoms it should be avoided as dairy products produce mucus.

I have never heard that, in fact ice cream would probably be quite soothing to a sore throat.

it depends on the source of soreness.
For a smoker's cough it will help.
For a sore throat based off of a runny nose and mucus it will just cause more of the same and make you miserable.
the same goes for all dairy.
