Sounds like your pet has began her heat cycle if her vulva area is swelled and you see blood. On the 10th day of her heat cycle she will bred a male if one is around,so contain her if you don't want a litter of pups. She will stay in a heat cycle around 4 wks. and will breed after the 10th day from when her cycle started. She won't give herself any infection by cleaning herself ,and you can call the vet and ask if she can be spayed during this time.

Yes...her hoo hoo getting very big is a sign of heat. My dog's hoo hoo swelled up so big that people thought that she was a male. She was swollen for almost 2 or 3 weeks before she started bleeding and it was just a little...a few drops here and there of bright red blood. It is hard to say when exactly heat starts because she may have been bleeding and you just hadn't noticed it yet. It is okay to let her lick herself, that is her instinct. It can be annoying, watching her lick all day, but not harmful. You can just let her be through this time however if you don't want puppies, do not leave her outside unattended and don't take her to a dog park or around any dogs. Male dogs will be attracted to her immediately and will try and mate with her. You can get her spayed during heat however usually vets charge a little more because there is a greater risk to the dog while spaying during heat (mostly just the risk of the dog bleeding too much). It is not uncommon and many vets do it so don't worry about changing the date. Just ask how much more they will charge to avoid any surprises. I got my dog spayed during heat and she was fine. Plus, it was less time that I had to worry about her being outside alone and no more mess.

Dogs can display signs of a lethargy, bleeding, a swollen vulva, and sometimes they will cry alot when they are in there heat cycle. Your veterinarian can still spay her during her heat cycle but usually there is an extra cost and some veterinarians may want to wait until her heat cycle subsides. She won't get an infection from grooming herself, it's just the same as a woman on her cycle your not going to hold off on bathing. This is your pets way of bathing.

Frequently bloody discharge and swelling of the vulva happen at the same time. However, first heat cycles are not always "normal." Whichever sign you saw first would be when her heat cycle started.
Check with your vet about her surgery. It is possible to spay her while she is in heat - we do it at the shelter all the time. However, she will need to be on additional fluids so the cost will likely be higher. Most private vets will opt to postpone surgery [being a shelter, we spay 'em whenever we can :o)].

They usually go into heat around a year. It's possible she is going into heat. It's normal for the genitals to swell when they go into heat as well. No you shouldn't have to change the date to have her spayed, but call your vet to double check. It may not be a heat at all. Know she will not get an infection in her mouth, she is doing what comes normal to all dogs which is to clean themselves. This is normal and safe as well.

Most vets wait until she is no longer in heat, seems to me she should be out of heat when the 22nd comes, and yes she's in heat did doesn't matter when she started since you are getting her spayed so late in the month, you may want to ring up the vet and make sure they don't want to push the date back.

Yes she's in heat. No she won't get an infection. Sounds like you need to do a little research. HOPE you are training her to have manners. Nothing worse than an ill behaved little yapper.
