I Love my Cat...What can I DO ?

I would go to an allergist and have a full test done. It could be the pollen the cat is bringing in on its fur, and not the cat itself that you are allergic to. I thought for years I was allergic to my cats, but I'm not allergic to them at all.

I know the feeling, I'm very allergic my cat. I had to resort to prescription meds to control the symptoms.

1. Try Claratin or Allegra. They're different meds and one may work better for you than the other.

2. Get one of the pet washes that you just put on a cloth and rub the cat down with. This helps some, I know when it's been too long since I did it. The flip side is being careful not to do it too often as it can dry out kitty's skin.

3. Brush the cat. Every little bit that's not circulating in the air helps. It may be better for you if someone else does this. I enjoy the time with my kitty, so I make sure I wash up afterwards.

4. Your vacuum is your best friend, use it often. Even though my vac has a hepa filter, I use hepa bags too. They're a little more expensive, but they do catch more of the stuff floating around.

5. Have as few rugs around as you can tolerate. They hold the hair, dander etc.

6. It's recommended that you don't let the cat into your bedroom so you have a cat free zone and your system gets some recovery time while you sleep.

If all else fails, see an allergist. S/he may shake their head because people like us are crazy enough to keep the cat, but the meds make all the difference to living happily with the critter.

Give it a bath, or wipe it down with a damp cloth. Take allergy medicines. It's not the cat you're allergic to, it's the proteins in the saliva that is all over it from licking itself.

Try Claritin. If that doesn't work, go to the doctor. He may give you allergy meds or he may have you tested for allergies to cats to see if you can get shots.
