HI, I sell on ebay mostly fabrics and patterns and I need a digi cam for the least I can pay but also that can take close ups. I have an Olympus from about 2001 and it has zoom and takes wonderful pics, but I can't get closer than 2 ft physically and then when I zoom, it won't get the pics of things like the pictures on the pattern fronts that are about 4-6" tall close up. What should I be looking for, what specs on a camera would I need to be able to do this ? would it cost a fortune a camera like this ? And I think I might be able to get a scanner and that might be the cheapest way to go but putting the fabric on the scanner might be tricky MAIN ISSUE, I HAVE LITTLE MONEY BUT MUST INVEST IN SOMETHING TO SELL SO I CAN HAVE MONEY AND THESE FABRICS ARE VINTAGE AND ARE SELLING BUT I NEED BETTER PICS.

Read your camera's user manual to see if it has a macro feature (usually designated by a sign of a flower). If it has one, learn how to turn it on your camera and you'll be able to get closer than 2 feet. If it doesn't then get a digital camera that has a macro feature. Pretty much most current cameras, cheap and expensive have this feature.

It really doesn't matter how expensive your camera is. What you really need is good lighting for product pictures. I can't stress this enough. You can have a crappy camera, but with really good lighting, you can take amazing product photos.

You should show us some of your pictures that didn't come out so we can tell what's wrong. Even a piece of junk camera should be able to focus a lot closer than two feet away. Then again, 2001 was a long time ago in digital camera history. Just about any camera on the market will be a lot better than what you already have. I've been very happy with my Fujifilm Finepix F10. It's $150 and the macro mode will focus less than an inch away. I used it to take a picture of my eyeball. It came out so well I could see the reflection of my camera on my eyeball. I agree with the first poster who said you need to make sure you have lots of light (use a flash?) too.
