People who wont get a certain breed of dog just because of what ignorant people train the dogs to do, are ignorant themselves. If you get a dog, ANY dog as a puppy, you give it love, affection and a good home, he/she will be a good dog. I have had a pit-bull, a husky and a rottie and they have been the best dogs anyone could ask for. It's not the breed of the dogs, it's the upbringing and the environment it's raised in that determines the attitude and behavior. Doberman's are big, so if you get one be prepared to have a very large dog. They are also prone to things like hip dysplasia so make sure that you feed them large breed dog food fortified with glucosimine. Good luck with your search, and try to keep an open mind and an unbiased oppinion.

People that I know that have them love them. They have changed the breed standards, and breed the aggressiveness out of them. The old Dobermans were a super tough dog. They were always the ones that wanted to get through a fence to attach me when I walked down the street. It raised a level of fear. I suppose that may people have memories like mine. Today’s Doberman is a different dog, but is hard to think of it as such.

Ya know I have had Min Pin's for the last 7 years, I just recently lost my last one to a snake bite. I will be getting a Big Doberman in December. I love the breed I am ready to experience the size of a large one now they are very much alike in temperment. My Min Pin thought he was a full size Dobie. They are amazing pets, can't wait to get mine.

Dobermans are loyal, intelligent and affectionate dogs if raised properly. Mine thinks he is a big lap dog, who loves small animals and children, but there is no question that he would (and has) defend me if the need arose. However they are a powerful breed that have been breed for a century for protection and they can become dangerous in the wrong hands.

I adore mine but they are not the dog for everyone. They are very people oriented and need not just want but need to be with their people to be mentally fit.

They are not outside dogs, do not tolerate cold at all, left alone they can become bored and distructive, they are high energy, walk around the block daily does not cut it with a dobe 2miles a day minimum. They HAVE to be socialized as pups and SHOULD be socialized almost daily. They are very much a 'take me with you' dog. The bore easily and bored dogs get in trouble, they have to be exercised both physically AND mentally. They are a smart breed but they are often not totally 100% housebroken to roam free in the house without chewing things or pottying in the floor till 10mths and some even older.

The breed has a ton of health issues, some things can be tested for by good breeders and lines can be researched for longevity but there is no magic kennel that has all healthy long lived dogs, a certian amount develop problems even from the best of lines. Good breeders who do health testing are the best start and give you a better chance but there is no guarentee in this breed. Dobes are prone to bloat along with other deep chested breeds and this is always an unexpected expense, usually through an emergency vet so its even higher priced.

Many home owners insurances, many rentals wont allow them. Some areas have them banned and BSL is popping up everywhere so it may be ok where you live today but not in a year. People prejudge the breed like some of the ones in this thread who have known only a few examples who were likely bad examples. People will prejudge you for owning one.

People get dobes rotts etc to give themselves an image and they are seldom the same people who will put a dog in obedience classes.

All dogs especially large dogs should be put through obedience classes, they need good food and medical care and it can add up fast, heartworm preventative, flea drops, food all the basics you need more of and is more expensive. Toys are more expensive because they have to have super tough types, walmart toys wont cut it.

They do not do well in loud houses or stressful enviroments lots of bickering or yelling etc. It is mentally hard on them to be rehomed more so than with most breeds. They tend to bond with one person in a family but like everyone

Dobes are great dogs but they are a 10+ yr commitment if your lucky. They will be your best friend for life but they should be viewed as a child as far as expenses go, if you would pay for a need for your child you should be willing to pay for it with your dobe. .

Research the breed a lot, talk to people who have them about the good and the bad, absolutly research and VERIFY any health testing the breeder says they have done. "my vet says they are healthy" is NOT health testing. BYBs are everywhere and pop out pups like pez dispensers. What you save up front you will more than spend in medical or behavior problems and may still have a temperamentally unsound and or unhealthy dog.

Look for a breed rescue if you do go to a dobe there are lots that need homes and someone to love.

My next door neighbor had 2 while I was growing up and they were both very sweet dogs. Their first was a female and when it passed away they got a male. Both were very good with children even though they didn't have children. It got along with their cat and they were very good dogs.

I have no problem with dobermans I like them better than the pom who bit me when I was young.

they are great!! Mine is a big baby, (she is still a pup). She loves to sit on my lap if i am sitting on the floor and playing with her. If i am sitting on a cough and she is feeling like i am ignoring her she will back up and sit on my knees. She is sweet and smart although a bit stubborn :-). from all the dobies i have known they are great dogs. Smart, loyal and beautiful. They do require a lot of exercise and attention.

I think they are beautiful dogs and if very well bred they make wonderful pets. I also feel that you have to know what your buy with one of these dogs too. Your should know the blood line and the breeders your getting one from. Too many really badly bred Dobermans out there and people who dont know how to handle them too.

They are very regal and majestic dogs!

I had a doby for 8 years, his name was Dante' and he was my baby. Very smart, loving, goofy, fun, agile and protective. He had hip problems later in life and died in his sleep from an enlarged heart, both big problems with dobes but I would get another one in a heartbeat. My son is four months old and I plan on getting another dobe puppy when he's 2.
