I have a cousin who is 9 y.o. and extremely religious. He insists on having a cross above his bed, prays all the time, and is very into church. His family is Catholic and they go to church most Sundays, but they aren't particularly devout. What has caused my one cousin (and not his 3 other siblings) to be so religious?

He also refuses to sleep alone, which makes me wonder if he didn't have some night terror or other experience that he interpreted as a "demon." Even aside from that, what happened to my cousin? Why is he so religious?

I would enjoy answers from all perspectives.

As a small child he is probably frightened of something (anything from a bad experience to just comprehending what a big bad world we live in) and is turning to the only spirituality he knows, Catholicism, for comfort.

It's not uncommon for kids to obsess over one thing or another... I think that if they are taught critical thinking and learn self-reliance, they'll find at least a modicum of sanity and firm spiritual ground.

It could be any number of things! Without knowing more about him... nobody can really say for sure

1) Felt a good social connection with people at church

2) The church gave some meaning to his life and/or the pain in this world

3) He was convinced by the threats of hell and sin

4) No particular reason at all... maybe just a small combination of a lot of things

There are probably dozens of reasons people draw closer to their religion!

hes catholic.

that explains it all. your probably right, he probably had a night terror and they thought it was demonic presence.

actually, if you look up sleep paralysis, many people interpret this to be demonic presence as well. you are unable to move your body, and you have this feeling of something sitting on your chest, holding you down. you feel the presence of some being in your room... *shrug* he may have had this happen to him. i know a few people who have experienced this, and it scared them to death.

Religious stories can be pretty frightening and traumatizing to young children. We had a sitter recommended by a friend who decided to indoctrinate out 7 year old while we were out. I truly thought we were going to have to take him to a therapist.

Because he WANTS to be religious. Leave the kid alone, already.
