First, i hope that's a realistic number. If you are close to your ideal weight - those last 10 or 15 pounds are the worst to try to lose.
Weight-loss is simple. Everyone will tell you, even if they're fat too, like me. Exercise so you burn off more than you eat. More exercise, less food. Easier said than done.
First - do not starve yourself. If you body detects that it is short of food it goes into "starvation mode" and packs away anything it can on the theory that things are bad and will stay that way. Your body will also start getting rid of muscle that's not needed, since muscle will burn calories - in starvation mode, the body tries to keep those calories around "just in case".
So eat 3 meals a day. Just make them healthy and sensible, and not too big. Eat more protein, less starch, sugar and fat. Things like an omlette instead of a bowl of cereal; let's say, for dinner have a chicken breast and some veggies; no potato. maybe, add a dolp of salsa and a little cheese for flavour on the chicken.
Stay away from things like burgers, fries, sugar soft drinks. For munchies, instead of candy or fried starch, try carrots or celery (with maybe a LITTLE cheese whiz or sour cream).
But, the real key with weight-loss is exercising. You want to do a mix of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. First, you want to burn calories. That's aerobic - walk, treadmill, dancersize, whatever - keep moving for at least half an hour a day. Second, you want to build muscle. Lift weights, climb stairs, run... push your limits, but don't kill yourself. Muscle mass burns calories just being there, even at rest. If you have a decent amount of muscle, you can eat more and still not gain weight, or burn off the fat you do have.
The book "Body For Life" suggests you alternate - one day aerobic, one day muscle-building, for six days. the seventh day, rest.
If you want to try a fad diet like the Atkins - it worked for me, I lost 20 pounds - from 228 to 208 in 2 months. Once I stopped, I put it all back on. Basically, you eat mainly protein - maybe a little fat in your meat or cheese. the theory is basically that the body uses sugar levels to decide it's time to burn fat, but over-all nutrition to decide if it's starving. So your body will not think it's starving (not turn off the muscle-burns-calories mechanism) while the need-to-burn-fat-because-I'm-short-of-food mechanism kicks in overtime because your body is short of carbs.
Oh, and one other thing. "Body for Life" also suggests you pick one day to indulge yourself. Don't go hog-wild with the pizza and hot fudge sundaes, but if you want *some* pizza or a medium bowl of ice cream, indulge yourself. This gives you something to look forward to, and also helps train your body that "no, I'm not starving".
Good luck.

My advice would be to do 30 minutes of exercise a day start slow and gradually go faster and longer. Also, try to make sure you eat 2-3 serves of fruit, low fat diary products, wholegrains and proteins including: eggs, lean meats, skinless chicken and beans. Don't deprive yourself from junk food occasionally(once a week) enjoy a small chocolate bar or any small treat of your choice. Good luck with the weight loss.

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.
