This is my first time visiting this site. Sorry if I'm not in the right location. Navigating this site is still a work in progress for me. Can someone help me? I was told I could possibly find a dog available for adoption, already house broken. I'm away from home for approximately 9hrs M-F.

My dogs are house broken, but I think 9 hours is a long time for them to hold their bladder!!!

I'm not sure what your question is. Are you looking for a dog that's already house broken? Or are you asking if a dog that's house broken can be left alone for nine hours during the week while you're at work?
Nine hours, contrary to the many answers you'll get here, is not too long to leave an adult dog home alone. Not everyone can afford to not work or has the option to work from home and the money for dog food and vet bills has to come from somewhere. If at all possible, it would be best to arrange for someone to come let the dog out at least once during the day if you're going to be gone nine hours (adults, both dog and human, can hold it that long, but would you want to go nine hours without a potty break?). You will also probably want to consider a less active breed. A border collie can hold it for that long, but they WILL drive you up the wall if they are left alone without a job to do for nine hours. A basset hound or a pug on the other hand might not mind being a couch potato 40+ hours a week as long as they get their walks before you leave and/or when you get home.
As for a dog that's already house broken, most adult dogs in shelters or rescues are already potty trained.

What exactly are you asking? Are you asking if a dog can hold it for 9 hrs after they are housebroken? Yes they can, but it probably doesn't feel good - so the time a dog is being left alone should truely be minimized... Or install a dog door - so he/she can go out...

My female rottweiler/german shepherd is left home alone 9 hours two days a week and he's fine.
My other dog's could only last about 3-4 hours.
Puppies can only last a half-an-hour - an hour-an-a- half. depends on age.

My six year old male pitbull Max..is housebroken....has been for years. I am gone all day to work, and he's alone about 9 hours or longer a day. He would never dream of going in the house. He goes back to bed. I always know because there's the warm snuggly part on my bed......

I have a Yorkie. He is 10 months and got potty trained around 7-8 months. He uses a pee pad. I have to leave him alone more now and he still uses his pad. Once they learn they wont forget.

HI, This is the number one question Dog Owners always ask me. How to Housebreak their dogs.
You have to understand the basics. What goes in must come out and you have to know when that is. You have to put your pet on a schedule.
Sit down and make a list of times your going to feed and water them. Make sure you give enough time for them to consumpe both.
An example would be when you get up in the morning take them out then bring them in and feed, water. leave it down for about 30 minutes. Then take them out agian. If their puppies your going to have to do this several times aday. But do this atleast 3 times aday and give a little water in between the feeding. That's right, you have to pick the water up too.
You don't have to leave water down all the time if their in a controlled eviroment like a house. Outside is different. But once the food and wtaer is down for 30 miutes, pick both up.
Write down the times your going to do this, plus the times you take them out. Stick with it. If they have anaccident in the house. DON"T yell at them, just writhe down the time and see if there's a trend of going that time of a several day period. If there is, adjust the schedule to make sure they go out at that time.
Some Dogs are very hard to housebreak, but with a schedule, atleast they will know when their going to be feed and taken out.
If your going out, crate them and then when you return just continue on with the schedule. If you have any other questions. Feel free to email me.
Best wishes

if you are going to be gone that long every day, reconsider getting a dog, it is not fair.
