Are you serious!? Is your fiance black? Do you feel the need to please your future in-laws or impress them b/c you know how to cook like black folk (or in this case fake it)?

But to answer your question (b/c I can go on and on about cooking "soul food" and I don't know if you intended to be offensive or not) SF is about cooking from your heart. Making miracles out of nothing. But if you want to keep it simple, you can always go to recipes.com or anywhere on the internet and bake a cake. If you don't trust your skills go to the store and buy duncan-hines or pillsbury boxed cake. If you want to get bold try to do the pineapple upside-down cake recipe.

I don't know if this is considered "soul food" but I had a friend in high school who was black and her family made mayonnaise cake for every event, here's a recipe

INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups white sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mayonnaise
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
In a large bowl mix together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the water, vanilla and mayonnaise. Mix well, then stir in the chocolate chips.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.

go to the library (if you can) and pick up Patti Labelle's Labelle Cuisine

anything in there is sure to please

or

go to your nearest soul food take out (assuming you live in a large city or country town) and get some

or get some mustard and collard greens from the grocery

wash them about 6 times

in a large pot of water (about a bit more than would cover the greens depending on how many pounds you buy)

get some salt pork or bacon (i prefer the salt pork for traditional southern greens) and boil it in the water

also, put in pickle juice, ham, sausage (any kind in the the oval thing...but spicy is best...you can use the cheap kind if you want), canned chicken broth (not the whole can)and pepper

when this is boiling add the greens

let them boil and then when they are almost ready, cut up white onions to serve them with

I am sorry girl, I cook by taste and sight and not by measure

get some Stouffer's macaroni and cheese and that can pass for okay (I prefer to make my own from scratch but for you okay)

then get some good pork chops

beat them until the are tender or pour a half a capful of vinegar on them to tenderize, then after about 10 seconds wash the vinegar off them

put them in a pan safe for the oven and smother them with cream of mushroom soup out of the can and cut up white onions

that is a quick and cheating way to make "smothered pork chops" if you don't know how to smother them with your own homemade gravy

so if you don't get the cookbook and use those recipes or pick up take out, then you can have greens, smothered pork chops, and macaroni cheese

A nice cobbler is easier than pie.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees farenheit and drain a large can of sliced peaches and pour them into a 9 x 13 baking pan. Mix in a bowl, one cup Self rising flour and one cup sugar, and one cup milk. Pour over peaches and bake for about 25 minutes. Cut a stick of butter or margarine into 1/4 inch pats and place them around the top of the cobbler, return it to the oven for another 20 minutes or until firm in the middle.
Remove from oven and serve warm or cold with ice cream.
The butter is optional but it does make a good rich crunchy top for the cobbler.

Sweet potato pie is a great choice, but if you aren't a cook, you should do a banana pudding. It's a real classic in southern soul food. It's a combination of vanilla wafers, banana pudding and sliced bananas.

desert

banana pudding
this is a quick fix, but this desert is enjoyed by everyone.

this is what you need:
glass dish (preferably deep dish)
two packages of vanilla pudding
nilla wafers
cool whip
and bananas

steps:
1) lay out the nilla wafers evenly on the bottom and side of the glass dish,
2) slice bananas, then layer them evenly on top of nilla wafers
3) open your packages of pudding and layer it on top, evenly
4) continue this pattern, but make sure that your last layer is the vanilla pudding
5) then to top it off, layer some cool whip topping to completly cover

good luck

wal mart! Sweet potato pie, fried chicken that's a desert too? candy yam in the can, heat to perfection, upside down pinapple cake. Just don't perpetrate a fraud and try to cook.
Or just be like most of my black friends and don't bring nothing and eat everything!
By the way, I like you a lot!
