Hi! My fiancee is joining the USCG and we plan on getting married in 2 months or so (not having a big wedding so it doesnt matter). I was wanting to know when the benefits kick in for both us (when we are married). Do they start when he signs up at MEPS (i think that is what it is called, its a weekend physical basically) or when he goes to bootcamp? Or after?
Also, when do the housing benefits (such as allowances) kick in?
Thank you all so much!

You and your husband will start getting paid and receiving benefits on his PEBD date. This is his Pay Entry Base Date. This is the date his starts his basic training usually. You will be entitled to enroll into DEERS and Tricare as soon as he leaves for basic training. You can get a military ID while his is in boot camp, I went to my husband's recruiter, he actually had his wife take me to get an ID card so that I could get enrolled into DEERS.
Housing allowance and food ration allowances do not start until after he has graduated and has received orders to a permanent duty station which will not be until after his Military Occupational School. In order to calculate what his BAH will be, they use the zip code of his next duty station, so the amount varies per cost of living. He will not get paid during basic training either, he will get it after he graduates in one lump sum.
When he signs up at MEPS or with the recruiter, he is basically just giving them a promise that he will join, nothing more. He isn't actually in the Coast Guard until he finishes basic training.
Good luck to you both!

You'll start getting full married benefits as soon as he goes to boot camp. It'll probably be around a month after he's in basic before the first paycheck.
Housing allowance probably won't kick in until he's settled at a duty station. Depending on where you are, housing allowances can greatly differ. But, for the most part, it should cover the cost of a home and it's utilities with no problem at all.
Hope this helps you.

if he is going Active Duty, benefits for spouses kick in the day he reports to Boot Camp, although for all practical purposes you will not have ACCESS until you get your ID card.. and that doesn't happen until he sends you the paperwork giving you permission to get it without him being there(as otherwise your sponsor is required to be there). you cannot sign up for Tricare Prime until you have your ID card. you are given Standard by default as soon as you are entered into DEERS.. which can be be the first day of inprocessing at Boot, or may not happen until 2 weeks later.
As long as you are married when he reports to Boot, and he brings along proof of same and your SS number, he will get BAH from day one, although it does take 6-8 weeks before pay actually hits the account. Keep in mind: BAH is NOT YOURS. It is HIS to maintain a residence for his family. it does NOT go directly to you unless he sets up a separate allotment to do so. BAS is NOT yours at ALL, it is to feed HIM only, and he ONLY gets it at certain times, and it will be taken away.
If He is going Reserves, you do not qualify for any benefits unless he is activated for more than 30 days.

As in anything else, it ain't over til the paperwork is done. Get your paperwork done and if it's anything like the Navy (believe all services are the same) all your entitlements will be started right away.
(Chad fyi; military benefits help put groceries on the table and can't be figured for retirement purposes. If you want to be pay extravagant taxes to furnish service folk with a live able wage, "bennies" wouldn't be a requirement)

dont listen to the idiots who say your first question is about the money. Ya know if a civilian applies for the job their first questions are what do we get paid an hour im sure. ITs our lives from the outside looking in no one totally understands. once you get married and go fill everything out..of course once he has signed the dotted line and headed off to bootcamp you should start seeing your pay.

If you are married prior to his joining.... he will be filling out part of the paper work during the enlistment process. The rest he will be filling out during recruit training. Everything takes time but basically it starts the day he enters recruit training and goes until he receives his discharge.
Good luck,
Z

Benefits will start for you once the paperwork is received at PSD (Payroll Support Detachment). Usually it happens after bootcamp. Housing benefits should kick in shortly after bootcamp as well.

All benefits for you begin as of the date of your marriage. All benefits for him begin with the date of his enlistment. That's the day he take the oath of enlistment and departs for boot camp.
