wd scorpio 600ve 60gig inside a simpletech external casing, it spins and looks like its doing something, but the ps3 wont recognize it

It's probably not an incompability with HDD himself - it's allright. Casing may cause this problem, since PS3 USB isn't as versatile as PC USB.

It's a pretty good idea. You can upgrade the 60 Gigs to 500 Gigs! and yes, your trophies will still be there and you can use the same name on the new PS3. As well as models, I think the 60 Gigs from about 2 years ago have IBM chips in them which makes online play a little smoother. Just a minor detail.

Connect it to a pc first and format it to a fat32 format, then plug it in the ps3.

PS3 doesnt recognise the NTFS format.
