I am having a new stairway fitted in my house. The stair parts are already coated in clear varnish but I want to use an Oak coloured varnish so that the stairs match the varnish on the rest of my skirting boards etc. I can't decide whether to apply the coloured varnish before or after the stairway is installed. I think it would be easier to get a good finish if I varnish it once the stairway is fitted but would love to know what the professional decorators do when they varnish new stairways as I will follow their advice.

A new stair has to be finished after all the traffic is finished during construction. The other thing you should be considering is to wrap the treads in heavy cardboard while is still in place before it is re-finished. The stair will have to be stripped so it can be stained the color you want. Re-varnish over clear will be difficult since pigment will not adhere to the clear finish as easily than it does to raw wood. If the use a stain varnish will also be difficult for the same reason.
The way to do this is to strip, stain and varnish, with the appropriate sanding steps in between.
Good luck

Do it last. Go over the surface with 000 steel wool and wipe down well before varnishing.
