Oh I agree that it was a war. My Dad served over there. Its just me and my boyfriend were "discussing" it. I said it was never "officially" declared as such and he said that it was.

The US government calls it a conflict but for those of us who were there...believe me...it was a war. 50K killed and 250K+ wounded.... it was a war.

Yes there was no declaration of war by congress. This is a procedural matter and has nothing to do with the actual events context.

War
NOUN:
1. A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties.
2. The period of such conflict.

It would seem to me that US operations in Vietnam was a war that did not receive any sort of official declaration by the US congress.

It was a war.

A declaration of war is a formal declaration issued by a national government indicating that a state of war exists between that nation, and one or more others. The last US declaration of war came against Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania on June 5, 1942 during WW II. The Vietnam War was a military conflict authorized by Congress on August 7, 1964 by a combined vote of 504-2. The media classifies everything as a "war", it makes for a better story and their "facts" do not have to be accurate.

To all intents and purposes it was a war, though the U.S. Congress did not formally declare war. The legal basis for the war was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which empowered the President "to take all necessary steps, including the use of armed force, to assist any member or protocol state of the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty requesting assistance in defense of its freedom."

Whether it is classified as a war or conflict depends on whether you consider that a formal declaration of war is required for a conflict to be defined as war.

It was a conflict. War must be formally declared. Vietnam, like Korea were not declared wars. Korea was calssified as a police action and Vietnam was called a conflict.
