My 9month old male Sharpei/retreiver mix is booked in to be neutered tomorrow.

I have now started to worry that something may go wrong, how likely is this?

Has anyone had anything happen to their dog whilst being done?

The success rate for neutering and spaying is 90 percent from time to time you get problems with incisions getting infected but if the dog keeps away from the affected area and its allowed to heal then there is no problem.
one thing no one else mentioned is the risk of anesthetic whether it be in human or animal with an animal there is slightly a higher risk if death ,im not trying to scare you but it does happen,
mortality rates from anesthetic are about 20 percent but its something any good vet would tell you about

For a male, the risk is almost non-existent. Just watch incision point for potemtial infection.

A bit higher for females but still not bad.

I was a breeder for 10 years (Shar Pei by the way), I spayed and neutered all pet quality pups before sending to new homes.
I checked my records and this was almost 100 animals.
I show 2 infections for females and none for males.
I lost ZERO pups.

A little TLC for a few days after is all you need to do. Follow your Vets instructions.

You are doing the right thing to neuter. Too many animals in shelters and rescue.

It's natural to worry. This is your baby. It is rare that this type of thing goes wrong. He is young and healthy, so there really should not be a problem. If he is under 20 lbs, I would recommend spending the extra money for Sevo gas. But, he sounds like he should be bigger than that. But I have taken many older dogs that were not as healthy in for a spay or neuter and never had a problem.

Its natural to be worried. But I have two males rabbits, and they were both neutered by a vet who I have known very well for years, and is a friend, and he explained the whole procedure to me of how they use the anesthesia, and he said the chance of something going wrong is less than one percent. So try to relax. You are doing the right thing!

Any surgery has the possibility of complications, but neutering is a common procedure and unless there is something already wrong with your dog (that would cause problems with allergies or a reaction to anesthesia, etc), there shouldn't be any problem at all.

Having your dog neutered is one of the safest operations that your dog can have. I can honestly say that I have never heard of a dog dying or being injured during this procedure. I have had 15-20 dogs in my life and none of them had any problems. I would say that it is prefectly normal to feel that way, after all, it's your baby, but your puppy will be just fine.

I have had many, many, many dogs neutered and have never, ever had a problem. Usually the boys come home and act as if nothing ever happened to them.
When you bring him home, try to keep him calm, give him a tiny bit of water, keep him from licking the incision site, keep him from jumping and comfort him. Trust me, I have been through this too many times to count, he will be just fine! It is harder on the owners than it is on the dogs!
Good Luck! I hope this has calmed some of your fears.

It's very unlikely. This is a common procedure, and almost every vet in the country has probably done hundreds of these. Male dogs are probably easier to neuter, as everything is easier to get to.

Be sure to follow your vet's recommendations afterwards for post-operative care, and you and your dog should be fine.

Oh - and thanks for being a responsible pet owner!

It is very unlikely that something bad will happen.

Just follow the vet's recommendation of no food or water after midnight.

Pray and don't get all worked up everything will go just fine.

Good Luck!

Your dog will be perfectly fine. Don't worry about him. He will do great and this is the most caring and responsible thing you can be doing for him as a pet owner.
Good job!!
