I am starting a half sleeve on October 21st, and I was just curious if the price I'm paying is a tad high. It might also be because of my geographic region though, but I'm still curious.

I live in Northern Virginia/DC Metro area. I went to the local shops around here to gauge price and talent, and I found the best one for me.

Anyways, my artist charges $150 per hour, and the piece should take approx. 8 hours..so I'm looking at $1200 total for a ballpark figure. Does this seem steep? Or average?

As a tat wearing and lover, I look at it as getting what you pay for. IF you pay 150.00 an hour, you are almost assured you are going to get a good job, beautiful art work and someone who takes pride in the job that they are doing on your skin. I'm sure you could find someone to do cheaper work but do you want shoddy work? A tattoo is something that you are going to wear forever, look at past customers of your artist, is their work beautiful? If you have other tattoos you know that they take time and that being able to produce beautiful pieces of wearable art is not something that just any joe can do. Its a talent and one that many of them practice for years to perfect. The man who does my work has a masters degree in fine arts, he is well worth the extra $$ that he can and does charge for his work.

if you are questioning the price then this isn't for you. A great artist demands a great price and there is a saying that goes along with things like this if you have to ask then you can't afford it and that's the truth in tats also, the best advice I can give as a tattoo artist is to look at the work your artist has done and decide if you like the quality, price should not be a factor when picking an artist, cheap artist = cheap work tell the person you have cash flow problems and that you need to pay by the session and I am sure they'll work something out good luck and make sure you want this for sure cause a sleeve is a ***** to cover.

I have both of my arms half sleeved and they both cost about $1000. my artist also charges $150 an hour but since I have been going to him for so long I don't pay full price. Both arms took about 10 hours each. If you include the tip I spent about $1400 on each arm and it is well worth it for good work.

Personally, I think that is way too high. Even though it's a half sleeve, they usually don't take that long unless they are making is truly perfect. If you are going to pay that much, I'd hope the person is going to do an excellent job. I haven't heard of many half sleeves going over 400 dollars to be honest.

I live in a town near the Va border in NC. Most places in this area that I have been to charge by what the design is and in most shops they have the prices listed, I have never been to a place that charges by the hour, I do have 3 tats that were 75 bucks a piece. I do not have a sleeve and they are in different places but I think I would shop around first.

Please do not base your tattoo on price. A tattoo must be based on the artist ability of the tattoo artist. A half sleeve is priced by the hour. A reputable artist charges anywhere from $100-$300 an hour.

I live in Wisconsin and that is the price that is posted in the tattoo shop that I get my tattoo's at. I have negotiated prices with the artist that I go to, and you should talk to the artist that is doing yours to see if you can negotiate the price you were given. If you have had work done at this shop previously, they should be able to negotiate a better price.... but if this is the "best" place you've found, you may have to pay for what you get. Good luck!

It doesn't sound too bad, especially as you've been told it will take approx 8 hours, he obviuosly works quickly for his $$'s. I'm 15 hours into a half sleeve on one of my customers and not quite finished, it will have cost them $1700 by the time it's finished.
