I think it's because people often feel insecure and want to have someone "locked in" as "their own". That's sad because so many times it does not work out for the long term these days - especially if there has been a previous failed marriage.
Some people get married again and again expecting different results - only to be disappointed yet again. Today it seems the best reason for being married is to have a "legal" family to raise children. It is an economic tie as noted in other answers above. Part of the problems come from the fact that very often one side contributes more than the other, and I don't mean just financially.
Marriage is not a reason to stop working on a relationship. Women and men are not "locked in" as much as they may have seemed in times past. If people viewed marriage as step in a relationship that still requires effort - patience, special caring, consideration, and often some sacrifices -
they might work as much as they did during the courtship phase. Complacency dooms many relationships.

Well, I've been married for 22yrs. My husband is my partner, the father of our two sons and my best friend. We share everything in our lives with each other. I think the main reason for marriage is the companionship. Your spouse completes you, fills all the empty places in your heart and your life. Someone to lean on and share happy and sad moments with. I don't see how people live alone, with no one to love them. I don't know what I would do without my husband; a part of me would be missing without him. People who marry again and again are still searching for the one person that completes them. Some marriages fail because people don't wait until they know enough about one another to marry or are unwilling to keep working on their marriage and it ends up in divorce. So, they continue to try to find someone else to complete them. Unfortunately, some folks just keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. I hope this helps.

People get married in the hope of improving their life. No one marries to sacrifice for the other person. People marry because somehow they believe it makes life better for themselves. Once you understand this basic rule, you can start to understand why a man wants to marry and why he doesn't.
Definition marriage:
The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife.
The state of being married; wedlock.
A common-law marriage.
A union between two persons having the customary but usually not the legal force of marriage: a same-sex marriage.
A wedding.

Most have spouses and Mate regualrly,
in the animal kingdom, its similar to an orgy, and some are monogomous,
Animals die and partners are replaced,
but generally its about procreation and instinct.
In the Bible, Quran, and Torah They tell you the purpose of Marriage is to bring forth one who will spread His Name and word.

Marriage is a union between a man and a woman who choose to share their lives until death. Plus, there are health and medical and financial benefits that come with getting married.
Why do people want to marry again and again? Well, my guess is that they seem to find someone that they love very much and marry that person only to find that it didn't work out.

marriage is a financial contract that only gurantees one thing
finances will merge including credit
and money will be exchanged at one point or another--either during or after the marriage
it is a binding contract that does not guarantee love or fidelity but proposes to promise those things
