Hi there! I recently had knee surgery and my orthopedic doctor told me to walk barefoot when I can because it would help with the pain in my knees (I also suffer from arthritis in my knees). With that in mind, I would think it would also help with back pain.

First walking prevents back pain.

How can I prevent low back pain?

"You can prevent low back pain with physical therapy, exercises, and stretching. Supports and back belts do not prevent low back pain.

Keep in shape, lose weight if you are overweight, and exercise regularly. Being inactive can lead to low back pain. Regular exercise like walking, swimming, or biking is good for your back. These activities put less stress on your back than sitting and standing.

Don't lift heavy objects by bending over at the waist. Bend your hips and knees and then squat to pick up the object. Keep your back straight and hold the object close to your body. Don't twist your body while you are lifting."

Here is the argument for barefoot walking developing the gluteus maximus muscles, muscles of the buttocks. This view says the development of that muscle is increased by walking barefoot and this prevents back pain.

There is a sound question for those with anatomically short leg or any other structural abnormality, if this may be counterproductive.

Without a doubt walking strengthens the paravertebral muscles on both sides of the spinal column, supporting the vertebrae, keeping them in alinement, and both correcting any misplacement and promoting normal pain free function.

The best statement about barefoot walking may be, if it works for you use it, if it makes the problem worse do not use it. But walking itself is going to help you overall.

Quite a few barefooters I've mailed with claim to have very good results from going barefoot. Also people in Japan claim good results from walking on cobbled stone mats or in 'barefoot parks' where they walk barefoot on different patterns of rock as a kind of massage therapy. But I am not in a position to tell you from personal experience as I have no back trouble.

walking is the most simple, and effective, of all exercises to lose weight and stay in shape and maintain good health.
Walking slows development of all forms of arthritis, degenerative joint disease, stops loss of bone mass in osteoporosis, and tones the muscles.
