Income basically is based on one's skill, training or education and opportunity, the first two playing the major role. In this competitive market, if you don't have the skill and the education, it is really difficult to find a good-paying job. While opportunity or market conditions is a factor, a skilled and educated individual coupled with the drive to succeed in most instances will likely to get the best jobs.
Needless to say, the best weapon to combat low income is to prepare, get the skill necessary, be diligent and work hard. If you wait for the sysytem to help you, blame the government for it's failure and all sorts but not yourself, then you'll be waiting for a long, long time.

I do agree with having an unstable job but what is stopping people from getting out there and going for bigger and better? I think this is a problem that starts at an early age not being taught how to fill out a resume or establish a good work history or simply having the opportunity to expand their knowledge. I also think that the neighbor hoods they live in is another reason if you grow up in that environment that all you know and if that's all you know without being taught any different that's how you are going to be.

There are a number of factors that play into the low income of a community. In my case, I have a college education and my husband is retired military. We have two children together and he has two from a previous marriage. He went to work while I stayed home with the children until they are ready for grade school. He was hurt on the job and work-comp only pays a portion of his salary. We are considered low income at this point. Then part of that is going to child support. There are other families out there that have different situations and that is not because of lack of education. Just circumstances. I can only speak for me and mine that due to the circumstances that we are thankful to have the Lord in our lives who sustains us in this storm. I am currently with a temp service while he is home with the children until he can go back to work. I would love to have a full time job that paid me what I was once making before the kids, but no one in my area is hiring that could pay that amount.

There can be several reasons for this...a lack of education leading to not being able to work in something higher paying, a disability of some sort, unstable job like you mentioned, having to pay for childcare or not having childcare at all, so the person is forced to work in more flexible, but lower paying jobs. Maybe there is no higher paying jobs in that particular area. People might not have enough job skills for a higher paying job. This is all I can think of...hope this helps.

Another major reason for this is lack of opportunities. This is a direct result of lack of education. That could be a direct result of various reasons, (i.e. dropping out of High School, no one has informed them of community college opportunities, hanging out in the streets with their friends, peer pressure to do drugs and alcohol). Kids that do not give themselves opportunities for an increasing global job market are going to find them selves doing more and more meaningless jobs. Meaningless jobs equates to paychecks that cannot sustain their families.

Lack of education or of a good education.
Lack of skills.
Living in a "poor" area i.e. one without opportunities.
No or little desire for improvement.
I'm focusing a bit more on the internal things that a person could effect, but there are probably a number of external ones as well. In any case there are definitely multiple factors for each individual.

jobs don't want to pay you what you're worth. I think minimum wage should be 12/hour. I worked in an office paying 10/hour with a child and I barely made it. i mean i had just enough for the necessities, nothing else. that meant no vacations, no good birthday presents, no money to buy clothes, no money to go out to eat, not even enough for car insurance, etc. thank god my car was paid for.
