I want to apply for Program Officer in the United Nations in Thailand (My home country).

I am 22 years old. I have been studying a BA and a MPA degree in the U.S. I will have a Master in Public Administration in May. However, I do not have enough work experience for this position (or other postions) in the areas of study.

Most jobs require 5-10 years experiences.

Should I give it a shot anyway?

Thank you very much for your kindness.

Yes, as you have already stated you are not likely to get htis position, but the experience of trying will be helpful to you. The next time you try, you'll have an awareness of the process.

Additionally, you never know what doors might open to you through the process. You may not get what you are applying for, but you may make a few new contacts that can assist you in obtaining a similar position.

I wish you well.

Hi girl,

U are just like me and many others in the age where people are venturing into areas they are list expected to do. U just like me, are studying in other countries and are rising above the challenge where we are, yet we still have the focus to do some stuff back at where we come from originally. This is a bigone i must say and even though your chances are slim, there is not harm in trail but the knowledge and feeling you gave it a shot. How will u feel if some one 21 tried it and got in :). I will feel like to kill myself. If you did not get it you will walk on but still have it next time to try again.

Finally "he that fights and runs, lives to fight another day" this may not apply directly but when u get much older and the post comes again you will still have the same question so try it now.

Hey no need to say the best answer gets 10points because we know it so just give that 10 points.
Cheers

You should apply. Many times, a higher level position is offered, but the organization has room for lower level positions as well.

Remember that someone already working in the organization may be promoted into that high-level position, leaving THEIR seat empty.

In your cover letter, describe your long term goals as including the Program Officer position, and that you are anxious to work your way up to that opportunity.

Frequently, too, when a position becomes vacant (someone was fired or quit), other employees who were close to that person get recruited away by the one who left, or are so angry about the change, that they quit, too.

AND, a new manager 'moves the furniture'. It is common for a new manager to reassign responsibilities, change reporting structures, or remove unproductive employees. It is part of the psychology of establishing their place in the hierarchy. All these situations create opportunities!

If the Program Officer position is what you really want, go for it! You will have lost nothing by trying, and stand to gain your dream job. By applying, you will also become acquainted with their unique selection process, individuals who are already "in," the and the work environment. If they conclude by saying that you don't have the experience they require, ask about other positions within the operation whose qualifications you meet. If you aren't selected, apply for other positions that you already qualify for and could live with until you are promoted after gaining more experience. Those may prove perfect portals into the organization -- *if* they promote from within (clarify this before accepting any position, though). Applying for additional jobs will also demonstrate that you are serious about wanting to work with them. If you don't find other suitable positions within the organization, monitor their open positions frequently; you never know when another Program Officer position will become available. Go for your dream!

If you have or are getting the education you need for this job position then you are already a step ahead. Alot of times getting a job is not just about your experience but getting your foot in the door for that first interview. If you can make a good impression on them and show tham that you are determined and a quick learner and convince them that you can benefit their company while you are face to face then you stand a good chance at having a new job. Good Luck!!!

I would say give it a shot!!! Although you do not have enough experience for the position, your marks in school and your personality may be just enough to land the job. Just have the confidence and if things don't work out...reapply later. I wish you the best!!!!

First, congratulations on your Masters! I hope to get mine within the next few years (or at least get started on it).

Second, you probably won't get that particular job, but see if that particular company has any entry level openings. That way you can at least get into the company and work your way up. Or if you can see if you can volunteer somewhere where you can gain experience in what you want to do.

Good luck and congratulations again!!

Yes. It never hurt to try.
As we say in America; "All they can say is no"!
If, they not get a lot of qualified applicants, you may be the best person for the job and they be willing to hire you than not have anyone.
Just be sincere and show a real desire to learn and do this work/job.

I say go for it; what do you have to lose? Always go for your dreams and aim high, life is short. Make the best of it. This may open doors for new opportunities in the future. Good luck!
