As I understand it, suffering is a message to examine what it is that is causing it. Often that cause is attachment (desire for) something that is unhealthy, inappropriate, or wrong for us. Sometimes its attachment to unhealthy mental states like greed, jealosy, pain from past wrongs that we need to let go of. Sometimes it is the pain of not wanting to accept an uncomfortable or undesirable truth. There are many causes of suffering in the world.
The next step is to realize that you are the source of the suffering by refusing to let go of the attachment to the emotion or thing that is causing the pain. Buddhism to me is about learning to stop poking yourself in the eye.
I'm not sure what phrase a Buddhist would use to sum this up.

the four great truths of buddhism
all existence is suffering
the cause of suffering is desire
the end of desire leads to the end of suffering
the means to end desire is a path of discipline and meditation
SO were a buddhist were suffering he'd probably wouldnt say anything because he'd be meditating to end his suffering.

Suffering reminds me that I live. I celebrate being in this moment of suffering now, for later, I will know the value of suffering, when I am not.

That her attachment to 'whatever' causes the suffering and seek to detach herself to something beneficial instead of something harmful. See site below to get a brief introduction. It has to do with the Four Nobel Truths. You should know how to do this.

They would be happy, because Buddhists want to reach enlightenment and the only way to get rid of pain is to suffer so badly it doesn't hurt anymore.
