Semi-automatic means you fire one shot with each pull of the trigger.
Automatic means that the gun fires continuously as long as you hold the trigger down.
Many assault weapons have a burst selector, 3 rounds normally, meaning you hold the trigger down and the weapon will fire 3 rounds.

Semi mode (semi automatic) requires you to pull the trigger to fire each round, or fire one round at at time.
Full auto will fire the weapon until you release the trigger, or run out of ammo, whichever comes first.
Some assault rifles will have a burst mode which will fire the weapon in three round bursts when you pull the trigger.

The fire control switch generally controls a sear that produces the desired results for the rate of fire.
Automatic mode: switches the gun to fire autiomatically or continuous fireing.
Semi Mode: is the switch that gives one shot per pull of trigger.
Burst Mode: is the switch that gives a burst of shots per trigger pull. Generally it is a three shot burst known as a "Tri-Burst", but could be designed into how many ever bursts you would desire.

There's manual, where you have to use some mechanism to reload the gun. Automatic means the weapons is expected to operate and continuously fire while the trigger is down. Semi-automatic reloads itself so you can keep pressing the trigger without need to trigger a reloading mechanism.
