I like FotoFace's advice about learning the business.

But as for learning photography, I found schools to be lacking. Photography is an art and you can only learn it by doing it. Schools can teach technical education (like how to set up the camera and such). But producing art is something that come from with-in.

You will find that many top photographers are NOT formally educated.

Good Luck.

Get a camera, take pictures, then bring them to a professional for comment. If you find your pictures are received well, study some books, consider taking formal classes or on-line workshops.

Experience is the best teacher.

Enroll in photography classes at your community college.

Although it is possible to learn photography on your own, its much much harder to do. We go to school for math and history and science so why not photography?
