You can buy software that will walk you through it step-by-step at an office store. Or, many office stores also carry blank forms that you can use as a template, then you just have to get the document notarized. I don't think either of these options is very expensive. Last year we got the software for free when we bought TurboTax, so you could keep an eye out for such a promotion at tax time. Good luck.

My husband is a lawyer (on the side from his main career...he's a bit of a type-A over-acheiver...lol).

He does a lot of wills up for co-workers in his main career, and deals a lot with fixing 'do-it-yourself' type wills also - it's a nightmare...you need someone who knows the law inside out.

Do yourself a huge favour and have a lawyer draw up a will. Call around and find someone with a rate you can afford.

You don't want anything written up wrong when it comes to potential custody of your child, and where assets would be allocated in that circumstance, etc. It's worth the $ outlay.

Research holographic wills and your state. Soem states they are legal, others they are required to be written up by an attorney. If they ARE legal in your state, then there will be specific requirements for your state, find an example and use it. I know it can be expensive but when it comes to our children it is worth having to spend it to just have it done right. When a will is written it is only stating OUR desires when it comes to our children and in the end the court does not even HAVE to go by what we leave behind.

I do not know where you live, but there are stationery stores such as Staples that have "Do It Yourself" kits. You fill them out yourself, and have a notary sign them at your local court. This is definitely much cheaper than hiring a lawyer to do it for you.

will have a will for your state if it is legal for you to do without an atty; and it will explain what you need to do to have it filed.

HOWEVER< with a custody of a child issue involved, you should at least have an atty look it over after completion

in Australia you can buy " will kit's" from the post office and they are a legal document and not expensive to buy or you can lodge your will with the public trustee and they will take care of everything, again, not expensive.

if you are low-income, try a local law school. law schools have what they usually call clinics, and most serve citizens of low-income in certain areas, for free.
