Int he Acts of the apostles, the Eunuch was reading scripture, but admitted he couldn't understand it without someone to explain it to him..

That is what a sermon/ homily should do. Emphasis on SHOULD>

In the Catholic churhc, we have a ritual that we follow for Mass, including that Catholic churches throughout the world use the same readings on the same day. It's kind of cool. The priest doesn't pick the readings-- in the protestant church, the minister picks whatever he wants.

Protestants can pretty much do whatever they feel like.

Most people DO sing at church. In the Catholic Church we chant. Beautiful and sublime.

The reason there is a sermon or "message" is because Christ told us go to preach the good news to all the world. So part of the mission of the Church is to teach.

The sermon or message is considered the food for our soul or spirit. We must feed the spirit within or our flesh will take over. The spirit and flesh are enemies. Singing (if anointed) is for praising and lifting up the LORD.

I totally agree. The preacher has notes and gets all heated up on one subject, calms down, looks at his notes and heats up again and it goes on and on and the crowd is looking at the clock on the wall or their watches, as he promises he "just wants to close with this one more thing", and away he goes again!!! Myself, I say let's sing and aborb what we're singing, after all the bible said, "sing joyously unto the lord" (maybe not exact wording, but close)!!!! There is a sermon in each song!!!

Churches do have singing but the word of God takes prominence every time, besides churches are not places of entertainment as such, even if some like to operate like concert halls just to place bums on seats.

Part of church is learning. How does one learn without some sort of teaching?

Then again I'm a Pagan, and we don't have sermons. Come to think of it, we don't have "churches" either.

Religion is all about beliefs. The sermon or message is helping parishioners to understand the beliefs.

I'm always hoping that they will try more Scripture and less talking about people problems. The Scripture solves people problems, but if we don't hear it from the preacher how can the Word of God work together for our good.
