The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
He wanted them to be innocent forever. Not necesarily uninformed, but unaware of evil/good. I assume no other types of knowledge were denied them.

Yes I do believe that knowledge is a great thing.
But did you ever just want to go back and see the world with the eyes of a child again? Where it all just made sense and if it didn't, then it didn't concern you because you knew with absolute faith that the adults in your life were in control?
Thats how it was, God was in control and everything was blissful. Until we decided that we wanted the knowledge to do it our way, without Gods help.
Now that we don't have His help alot of people want to blame God or state that He doesn't exist.
PS. Dang! LOL! Now I remember WHY I hate snakes so
much!!
*****edit****** (In response to your response for Ms Shell). Who said sex is a sin? The bible never said sex was a 'sin'.

They were purely innocent, god had created an innocent race.
Satan disguised as the serpent tempted them to have knowledge and in having knowledge they did the ONLY thing god asked them not to... sin. they were then no longer pure.
God also wanted to trial his new race to see how perfect they would be but after a while he realised he was unhappy and thats where Noah's ark comes in.

We do not know what God had planned regarding the divulging of information to Adam and Eve,it may well be that He would have taken them slowly towards higher enlightenment but the fact remains that they tried to pre-empt God and do things on their own authority.

The Garden of Eden story was plagiarized from the older tale of the Anannaki found on the Sumerian tablets. In the original version, the Anannaki enslaved the humans that were there to help them mine gold. "Eve" was a male and the "snake" an Anannaki trying to help the humans escape enslavement.
It was terribly twisted to fit the needs of the early writers of the bible.

Knowledge of good and evil, not general knowledge.
To understand good, you must understand evil. Evil is subtle and easier to follow than good, therefore he did not want man corrupted. It is in the same way a parent protects a child from the abuses of the world by preventing them from crossing the street, etc.
Your arguement is similar to this:
Why were my parents bent on me not having knowledge about sex. They would not let me watch porno when I was 5, so were they preventing me from learning about sex to stop me from breeding, or enjoying its pleasures?
You only look at the benefit of knowledge without its costs.

This is one of the largest holes in this retarded story. If there was a god, and this god was all-powerful, why would he just not 'intelligently design' people without a sense of curiosity? He designed us with major limitations in other areas so if 'he' is so loving, what's up with the drama over knowledge? The more people know, the more they are able to appreciate the wonders of this universe. 'He's already got real sheep; why would 'he' feel the need to create humans with sheep like qualities?

Try following the basic thread of the story through Genesis:
(Ch 2)
8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil...
15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
As we all know Adam and Eve did eat the fruit, after which:
(Ch 3)
22 the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Obviously God had big plans for Adam and Eve, starting with the Garden of Eden, after which they were to "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it." (Gen 1:28) Remember there was no death then and Adam and Eve and all their descendants were going to live for ever.
It seems that God planned for the eventual use of the two trees of Knowledge and Life, or else he wouldn't have put them here on earth in Eden. But it was not His intention for Adam and Eve to know about good and evil at this early stage, because obviously they were not ready.
It was not about God keeping them uninformed, but about Him keeping them protected and innocent until they were ready for more, until they had carried out His commands about the earth and learnt what they needed to know to prepare them for the knowledge of good and evil.
This was especially important because with Evil came Death, and they had yet to learn about Life.

If we do not know the truth it gives control to??
I was challenged to read the whole bible (king james version) about 10 years ago. I read the whole book I am no longer christian. The atrosities the god of the old testament created, allowed or promoted was too much for me to continue to believe that could be the same god of love the preacher professed to exist. I believe in a god of unconditional love that created our souls with free will (not humans) in his likeness. many souls could not bear to leave fathers side for the loss of love. many souls went out and returned to share their adventures. Some souls rebeled wanted to be a god themselves. This place (earth system) WAS CREATED FOR THE SOUL TO MAKE ITS FINAL CHOICE. Do they really want to be a "little God and live in dominion=lordship over others. or return to father of love/fellowship/joy/sharing/ab... bliss.
What if heaven and hell are exactly the same except for one difference? What ever you picture in your head heaven to be, imagine hell to be the same except for one difference. Everything you can do in heaven you can do in hell except for one difference. The difference is love or dominion. If you choose love you are in heaven, you are sharing love/joy/fellowship, absolute bliss in all you do.
If you choose dominion you are in hell, everyone will be dominion bent, acting without regard to anything but personal pleasure, personal gain, exercising power over others. Everyman for himself in all that is done. Everything else is the same.
Now which path do/will you choose? LOVE or DOMINION

P.S. Doesn't hell feel a lot like earth?

OMG! It's the complete opposite!
Before Adam and Eve were sent down to Earth, God has taught them everything about life and beyond, he taught them the arts, the science behind everything, the names of all the items made in the past, present or future... and everything you can and cannot think of!
On the contrary, they know even more than us.!
