Besides the usual LIFE and LOVE and Memories,,,i would say:
When I was much older and had grown kids she bought me a doll ...She told me it was almost beyond her memory when she last bought me a doll and now since I my kids were too old for dolls she figured a cute doll would look good around the house for old times sake...It was interesting and I keep it in my room and always think of her when I see it..

The best thing my mother ever gave to me (besides life) was a lecture. She sat me down and explained to me how important education and independance was for a woman to have. She made me promise that I would never be dependant on a man for anything. Emotionally, financially, or physically I should learn to support myself and never feel guilty about choosing to be alone when a man treats me less than respectfully.
I have heeded her warnings. I am now a nurse, a single mother of an 18 year old son (whose father never chose to be in the picture)... and we are doing just fine on our own.
My father was a very dominant man who beat my mother early in their marriage. He changed, and they are still together to this day. Fourty years of marriage that has come through many problems. This is also a testiment to my mothers inner strength. It was a different time for women back then. My mother was determined that I would not suffer these things.... so she made sure I finished high school and went on to college.
I will always love her most for that. She may not have been highly educated, but my Mom is a smart lady. Life taught her a whole lot.
She came from a family of 13 kids so needless to say she lived in poverty. Her father died when she was only 13 years old and left her to take care of her mother who was severly bipolar. This was before they understood these disorders well in mental health. She watched her Mom be taken off and given shock treatments. After coming back home, grandma would sit in a rocking chair all day and recite Bible verses from memory. My poor mother would have to go to school everyday, come home and take care of the house, then do all the things for her mother that she could not do for herself.
All she ever wanted was to have a family who loved her and and who would keep her safe from ever having to live like that again.
I will never allow my mother to suffer. I love her with all my heart and owe her my life... in more ways than one.

she gave me so many gifts such as life; discipline; her wisdom; her values; unconditonal love and the greatest gift she gave me was herself for always being there for me as a mom as well as friend. She gave her career as a nurse o be a stay at home mom. I have taken these gifts and tried to apply them to my relationship with my own daughter.

I know this sounds mean... and I'm sorry to say it... but my birth mother never gave me those things that I needed so desperately. I can sadly but honestly say that I got what I needed from others, except her birthing me. The only thing she taught me was how to fold a towel. God gave me everything else... and I didn't learn about that from her either. My mother in law was a better mother to me. Now I KNOW She loved me! I know we shouldn't say anything if we can't say nice things about people... but some things happen that aren't positive about people, and that stay with them. But, I got over it years ago and am a happy woman now. God has blessed me tremendously and a whole bunch!!!

Freedom, unlike a bunch of them strict white suburbian moms. My mom knows I drink and doesn't mind as long as I'm not driving and I'm sure she knows I smoke weed. Magic Mushies is a different story tho.
