My children want a playstation for xmas. They are 6 and 9 years old. I only can afford about £150.oo (sterling) and from the answers I have had, it seems that its a bit of a waste of money to buy a PS2. I would love a ps3 or a Wii but they are too expensive for me.
If I buy a PS2 with one controller, there is a package which includes 5 games that I know they'd enjoy, for £130 plus £9.99 for an extra controller. Should I bother, or not?

A PS2 should be fine.
Up till recently they've still been outselling the newer PS3 and 360, and has the advantage that their are already plenty of games out there which you can pick up relatively cheaply.
Ignore the nay-sayers and have some fun!

There is going to be cheaper 40GB PS3 on the market - around 400 euros. Just don't buy 360 - it breaks all the time.
