I totally agree with the two previous answers however retraining is a MUST.

I have read Jan Fennell books (animal behaviourist) and despite reading these and putting theories into practice we have found that the 'Dog Whisperer's theories (can be seen on TV) has worked better.
Obviously the dog wants attention but by giving it treats you are encouraging the behaviour; sounds crazy but TRUE!

Whats happening is the dog thinks it has to protect you - the leader of the pack; try and turn this around so she can be given the freedom to be a pack member with YOU being the LEADER!

We have a very noisy boy and tried Jan's theories which were working to an extent but then we chose the Dog Whisperer's theory as this had a better impact; can be daunting difficult to decide which method.

The first theory we tried was to say thank you to the dog for alerting us then ignore him. We told our visitors to completely ignore the dog and once the dog was calmed down and only then were they allowed to speak to him; thereby encouraging good behaviour.

The second theory and the one we have stayed with is the peebles in a plastic bottle; we have several of these throughout the house and garden! Whn he barks we shake the bottle and that really does have an effect for our boy!

Good Luck

Well, I only read one of the answers and they never even really answered your question. What you need to do, though it may sound mean, is get in its face and tell it to shut up. You don't have to be too loud or hurt it or actually be RIGHT in its face, but stare directly into the dog's eyes and tell it to shut up.

Yeah, it does sound mean, but sometimes it's the best thing to do. Everyone wants to make training animals so complicated. Just because they don't talk doesn't mean they don't understand. I have a Pitbull, Pit, Chow mix German Shepherd, and a Chow mix Pit. All of mine listen to me when I tell them to be quiet. Why? Because I'm the authority figure. Lol.

Once you've gotten it to be quiet, though, give it a treat and tell it that it's a good boy/girl, and pat its head. You have to let it know that you aren't happy with it acting all insane over people who have already made it into the house. That's all dogs want, is to make you happy.

You're rewarding her for barking, by giving her treats, just making the problem worse. Praise her when she's being QUIET.

Try turning your back and ignoring her. She wants attention so she has to learn that barking isn't going to get it.
