Hi Lightening,
That is a good question... I'm glad to see that you are reading your bible carefully. Please continue to read carefully and you'll find all the answers because "anyone who seeks will find."
Here's a few quotes that shed some light on your question... and make logical sense to me! :)
Psalm 8v5 says that man is made a little lower than the angels.
Man is described here with reference to our relation to angels, and therefore the reference to plural in Genesis includes God and His angels.
1 Kings 22v19 is another occasion where we glimpse how God works in heaven, and He is discussing what to do with His angels...
Have a read of 1Kings 22.... its an interesting read and will give you more incite into what was happening in the beginning as you quoted from Genesis... that is, that "Let US make man in OUR image" is only part of the discussion of God with His angels!
Luke 20v36 is where Luke records Jesus' promising that the worthy have the opportunity to be made equal to the angels in the future.... which is part of the purpose for God creating man in Genesis.
Hope this helps. Keep reading! :)
God bless.

Oh, oh, I studied this is school! LOL
US and OUR refers to the Holy Trinity - God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Spirit (Holy Spirit)
which means they were present during our creation :) God was speaking to Jesus and the Holy Spirit that time.
Since, they are kind of like one person (example of this is water. it comes in different forms - you have the liquid water, the solid water - ice and so on) So all the same guy in different forms. Understand a little? :)
We are humans, created by God :)
Whew...that confused me a little! LOL
Maybe I havent explained it well though...or missed something. What about asking a pastor or a teacher or a priest or something? :)
Last time I did that, I was told about the water thingy then I was told to accept it just as it is. I'll understand better "next time". They said our human minds aren't that powerful enough to understand God what He really is...
Just know, based on that statement, God wasn't alone when He created us. Oh, and we're still us no matter what :)
Hope I've helped!

The Trinity is the easy out on that.
Which is logically absurd, because Genesis stems from back when the god of Judaism wasn't suffering schizophrenia yet.
Pluralis majestatis, on the other hand, would be befitting one that is so much higher than any mortal claiming majestic plural as their birthright.

The Bible teaches that Jesus before he came down to earth was a heavenly spirit being, God's first born, his only-begotten son.
This means, and it is said, that all other things came into being through this heavenly Jesus.
As Jesus said when on earth, "I can do nothing on my own initiative." He only accomplished what his Father, God told him to do.
Now, we can understand that scripture. God is here talking to Jesus, his son, his master worker, and telling him to make man.

"Everyone with understanding knows that the Christian doctrine is so baseless. Their lie is a bold one, and they compound their errors with lies upon lies - they try to take proofs from our own Scriptures.Their fathers have been deceived by the words of men who created their doctrine in the first place, and they in turn inherited the lies."

Lightening,
The Father, the SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT are considered the Trinity. GOD has three parts who were all included in the beginning and shall be until the end. Have a wonderful week.
