The way the power is figured is based on the formula

P=1/d where d is in meters.

Your eyes are too strong for you. So you are able to see close in front of you instead of having to work hard to see close.

If your eyes were +1.00 too powerful, you'd be focused at a meter in front of you and you'd be given a -1.00 lens to correct for that.

If you were too strong +2.00, you'd be focused at a half meter in front of you, would need a -2.00 lens.

third of a meter, need a -3.00
forth of a meter -4.00
fifth of a meter -5.00

Your eyes are strong enough to see something a little closer than a quarter of a meter in front of you without having to focus your eyes. That's about 1/4 of 39 inches or just under 10 inches or so.

If, when you do have that Rx in front of you, you can see well, you'll see the 20/20 line on the chart...good eyes.

If you've never worn glasses before, then yes, this is a strong prescription. Its not awful. But, its all relative.

For example, my prescription is about a -0.75ou (in both eyes), so compared to me, your eyes are VERY bad.

However; my best friend has twice your prescription. She's actually almost a -9.00 in each eye so compared to her prescription, your eyes aren't so bad.

To that end, I have seen patients who are +/- 12.00, so compared to them, my best friend's eyes aren't that bad.

See what I mean by saying its all relative?

You DO have a fair amount of myopia, and it'll probably continue to get worse every year. If you've never worn glasses before, it can be tough to get used to at first. But hang in there because you'll find that you've been missing out on SO much!

Good luck!

Yeah, it's bad. You should definitely get yourself a pair of glasses or you can get some contact lenses.
