I know a little of what you are feeling. I tormented myself for 1 1/2 with thoughts of overdose, felt highly unsafe like I could do something really bad. I even tried to starve myself for 1 week to rid myself of thoughts (it worked as I was hurting myself but the thoughts came back when I started eating again).
Sunday night I to eventually get rid of the thoughts I actually took 16 ibuprofen tablets with 3 units of cider. On the Monday I took another 16, but because I am so worn out and tired and not eating properly I couldn't manage to take any more than that. It was really difficult to swallow, and took a full glass of water to take just 16 (on other occassions I could take 16 in one gulp of water). After 1 glass I felt so worn, tired and full/bloated I gave up.
I still went to A&E and was discharged at midnight. I have refered to the crisis team (again) and also to a local psychiatrist, and I am still waiting for my referal to go through to a therapeutic community. They didn't want to admit me (though they know it is very likely I'll overdose again) to a psych ward. This is because they believe that seeing really crazy people worse than me will make me unsettled and feel worse in myself. They also believe that I'll pick up bad behaviours from the other patients. They said most of this to my sister.
My advice to you would be to keep the samaritans phone number on your mobile and carry it with you. Also try asking for a referal to your local crisis team, so if you feel desparate enough to kill yourself, you can speak to somebody and they'll send somebody round to see you at home. I know how it feels when they don't appear to be helping you at all. I told my therapist that I was feeling desparate so he said lets meet again at the end of the month. Definatly talk about it with your councellor, they should be able to help alleviate a few of your fears and hopefully get you support in your area.

Hi. By the time I'd got an answer ready you'd got lots of answers and could wait to yr counsellor. I assume you are in the UK as sectioning is a UK term. See all those people telling you to phone 911- they are American! Others were Brits. You need never be frightened and you're not alone. Within minutes people from around the world think that You ARE important.
A lot of us have depression and have been where you have been just now so whatever you've got going on you're not the only one and there's other people like you who know that when it's really bad it's not going to stay that way.

i'm not sure what you mean - and this is something that i am sure varies by state. if you are talking about being disabled - that is social security, people with schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and major depression usually get it after a fight but only with an attorney helping. it's complicated. if you cannot be gainfully employed that is a big thing. but - you usually need multiple psych hospital stays. and to get them you need to be a danger to yourself or others. if you have any of these illnesses you are mentally ill but many people manage fine. i'd really need to know more....find a good therapist and caseworker. the caseworker does the paperwork most of the time...and i have found tend to do a better job than a doctor in filling it out. good luck. if you need the benefits i hope you get them. please try your local mental health association. now if you mean can they commit you - if you are a danger to yourself or others - yes.

Hello
You sound very distressed and you are doing the right thing looking for help.
You need to go to see you doctor, councillor, or local A&E department at once if you feel like hurting yourself. In the UK there is a 24 hour crisis line that will help you 0800 028 8000.
You must tell them that you feel that you are going to harm yourself and you would like to go into hospital. You do not have to be 'sectioned', admission can be voluentary.
Remember, the way that your are feeling is a symptom of your illness and it can be treated and you will get better with the proper help.
Good luck.
Hammyhog.

hi :)
i went through a lot 3 years ago and whether or not everything looks bad right now i guarantee you itll get better.
i was in a psychiatric hospital for one and a half weeks, and stuff slowely but surely got better! the thing is youll look back at this in the future and laugh about it, because youll be happy :)
if i may ask, what are the things that are causing problems with you? identifying those problems are important! maybe it's something you can change, theres a lot of options whether you think there are or not
goodluck though, i know youll be better
also!
think about the people who are close to you, even if they haven't been there for you recently. what about your family, your friends, and everyone else associated with them. if you chose to do something that wasn't safe for yourself you'd hurt them a lot. trust me, i saw my father break into tears for the first time in my life.
if theres one reason you have to live it's to not hurt your loved ones.
plus theres always the future, it'll get better!
@Katesgame11
i did the same thing! i was forced onto anti-depressants for 90 days by the court, and they never did anything for me except seemingly make things worse.
talk to your doctor about it first if you do consider that though! make sure youre closely monitored, as sometimes people will get REALLY depressed after getting off of them. but i know for me it really did help things a lot. anti-depressants aren't all they seem to be!

Try to give yourself a perk, have a nice bubble bath, watch a film you enjoy, play a game, do some exercise or physical activity. Try to start over with a new study, new job, new friends.
I've never been so unhappy and frightened but I have had bouts with depression, it helps if you try and achieve something, even if only a small thing, like tidying up drawers.
What's put you in that bad situation? Do you want to talk about it? Feel free to get in touch...

Please don't be scared. I used to take anti depressants after going through a very traumatic period in my life and they made me feel worse. The best thing I did was stop taking them. You need time to heal and believe me things do get better. I was traumatised for a long, long time but now I am fine and very happy. Enjoy your life, make it what you want it to be. All the best x

If you ever get sectioned it will affect your employment status and the medical profession will not take you seriously - for the rest of your life!
It will also affect you if you go on to have any children - you will be scrutinised closely and risk the social services being involved in your life.
DO NOT go down that route.
See your counsellor and work hard towards getting your life back together because you never know what the future holds.
