Hi, I am helping out a local shelter with a questionaire...plz answer honestly without prejudice....
Do you or have you chained your dog to a box, tree, pipe, etc. 24/7? IF you do why? or Why wouldnt you? State laws are beginning to go into effect which could charge families with animal cruelty and neglect/abuse for chaining dogs.(some states already do, but don't enforce) How do you feel about this topic. If you chain, will these laws stop the way you house your pet? Do you think SOME chained dogs benefit from being outside 24/7?
Thanks,
Just honest answers would help me out..either way..
Thanks for your time...

Dogs are pack animals and are very family oreintated. I think that chaining a dog 24/7 is not a way to take care of any dog properly. Keeping a dog chained constantly can also lead to major problems with that dog. Problems with potty training to aggressive behavior. I don't see any benefits to keeping a dog chained outside 24/7. In my opinion, why have a dog if you are going to just chain it outside for it's entire life?!!
I do tie my dogs out on our porch on and off again through out the day, because I don't have a fenced in yard. They love lounging outside for about a 1/2 hour or so. But are mostly in the house with us all the time. Except for going potty and going for walks! My dogs are very much a part of my family and love being around us.

Do you or have you chained your dog to a box, tree, pipe, etc. 24/7? My parents had a dog chained outside for 15 years when I was growing up. Looking back on it now breaks my heart. IF you do why? or Why wouldn't you? I think my parents did out of ignorance and the fact that if he wasn't tied up he would get hit by a car and they didn't want him in the house. They have a dog now that has free roam of the yard but they have moved. I would never do it after seeing him tied up all those years.
State laws are beginning to go into effect which could charge families with animal cruelty and neglect/abuse for chaining dogs.(some states already do, but don't enforce) How do you feel about this topic. If you chain, will these laws stop the way you house your pet? I am perfectly fine with the passing of laws to keep people from chaining their dogs all the time. I personally would never do it even if they did not pass laws but I do not think that the passing of these laws would keep people from doing it.
Do you think SOME chained dogs benefit from being outside 24/7? Dogs like to be outside but I do not think they get anything from being chained up outside and it gets very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer time and I think that they should be allowed inside in these conditions.

If you are concerned then call the SPCA, not just your local animal control maybe. I am not sure of the laws in your area, but I think in some places it is against the law to chain dogs, and in some places it is legal. I think it's cruel and should be illegal. As for you saying you don't want to risk him getting to euthanized...well, I kind of wonder which is crueler: Spending your entire life in a small circle at the end of a chain or a quick death? Maybe you could talk to the people about it? Say you see him out there all the time and if they don't want him then you would take him. I got an Australian Shepherd that way before because a neighbor guy threw him up in the air and kicked him in the head. I am not exaggerating. It was awful. Gosh I hate people.

No I don't and wouldn't chain my dog up 24/7, however i do not disagree that a dog can be chained up, as long as there is enough length of chain that the dog has a fair bit of movement allowed, Adequate shelter, food, and water, also the dog must have at least 2 hours off chain exercise a day. I think it is a last choice to chain a dog up, if people are going to purchase a dog, they should make sure they have adequate fencing for a dog.

No! Dogs should Never be chained 24/7 . If dogs are outside they deserve at least some time to run about without a chain around their necks.

The way I see it is if you get a dog and chain it 24/7 then why get a dog in the first place! It is without a doubt very cruel to chain a dog 24/7. People that do that end up with a dog that is unsociable and if got loose could be a threat to the community. I often hear from people that chain there dogs that their dog is untrainable. I tell these people find the dog a better home with trainable owners because the dog is not untrainable its the them that is untrainable.

People that chain there dog 24/7 need a 2x4 slammed upside their head in my opinion!

It depends on the situation. If a dog is chained up 24/7 BUT receives at least 6 hours of human interaction and receives at least 1 off chain walk/run a day it would be okay IF the dog had adequate shelter, food, water, toys, and enough chain length to run around at least 5 ft away from his/her shelter. BUT if the dog is chained up, only receives human interaction when getting fed, and doesn't have adequate shelter to protect them against harsh weather conditions, then NO. I don't think a dog benefits from being outside 24/7 because they would receive less human interaction. A dog benefits from being inside by receiving human interaction. Also, I would imagine a dog that is allowed inside also is less nervous or jumpy and doesn't go hay wire when people come say hi.A dog that is indoors gets used to human noises all the time (the t.v, radio, vacuum, fans, blenders, hair dryers, etc) Imagine if a dog that was outside 24/7 and then was brought in most of the day. It probably would be afraid of all those new, scary noises. If a dog interacts with people most of the day, then when it would see them it probably wouldn't go berserk as if they hadn't see them for over 8 hours. A dog that is outside probably would be prone to more diseases and barking a lot because of boredom. They would be more prone to diseases because they are spending all the time outside where ticks and fleas exist, especially in the mountain. Plus if you live where it is fairly hot or fairly cold, you would have to prepare your dog for those extremes. Personally, I think if people want to have a dog it should be allowed indoors (even if it can't lie on the beds/couches, etc) Dogs are mans best friend and they really can't be unless they get to see man.
Hope This Helps!!!!
Good Luck!!!
Oh and we have 3 dogs a border collie, white shepherd, and a shepherd collie mix and they are all indoor dogs and don't like to be outside for long periods of time.

Something else I just thought of was that if a dog is chained outside 24/7 for most of its life, if you were ever forced to rehome him/her and the people wanted the dog indoors then you would have to face the challenge of house breaking him/her.

Well, I think it's cruel, for the animal to be chained up all the time. I do put my dog out in the yard on a "lead", (you know with the post in the ground), and sometimes I'll leave her out there for hours. I work a lot and sometimes when I come home, I'm too tired to walk her, so I put her outside on the chain. We have neighbors across the street though that leave their dog on a chain all the time, it's horrible, he's a SWEET husky-type dog. Sometimes in the middle of the night (I work nights so I'm up), I sneak over and let him off the chain and let him run all over the neighborhood (we live in a very rural area, so I don't worry about cars), chasing cats and rolling in dead stuff, then I take him back to their house and put him back on the chain. I heard them complaining the other day about how they couldn't figure out why he smelled so bad, it made me laugh. If I had a big backyard, I'd just dog-nap him and keep him forever...LOL!

No, I would not keep a dog if it had to be chained 24/7. I think it is cruel. I totally agree with the laws that prevent this from occurring. If you have a dog that must be chained 24/7, you do not need a dog. They need to socialize, exercise, and be a part of a family, not a yard ornament. I would fully support that law in community.

Well i have 3 dogs and i would never chain them 24/7. They r more like humans well they think they r any way. Im home most times so they r always running around the house or outside. I love dogs and any one who is cruel 2 them needs 2 be locked up.
