It plays a large number of PS2 games but not all
I have a 60gb and I only have 1 game for PS2 that doesn't work currently out of a few hundred
I would recommend getting the 60 over the 40! It is a bit more expensive but is much better for the amount of downloadable stuff on the PSN (Playstation Network)
Too find if a game works on the PS3 go here

I would recommend you to get the 60GB model because the 40GB model does not include the backward compatibility, meaning it can't play PS1 or PS2 Titles. I think it is a little odd, but most people would recommend the 60GB unless if he doesn't have PS2 titles or doesn't like playing PS2 titles. With 40GB of hard drive you will only get about 25GB, which isn't a lot for a PS3 because the games actually do take a lot of hard drive. When I bought my 60GB and checked the system hard drive, it said I had 45GB/55GB because 5GB was used for the operating system, and the 10GB was used for formatting things. I hope this helps! Good Luck on getting a PS3!

40GB version doesn't have backwards compatibility at all - check www.n4g.com or other serious gaming sites. If your son has a lot of PS2 games - get him 60GB version, it's a bit more expensive one, but it has a better backwards compatibility, more USB ports and card-reader, however the best of the best for PS2 games is 60GB PS3 from US or Japan - it has an especial chip for that purpose, while in Europe there is no such thing, old games run on software emulators. If your son owns a lot of games for euro PS2 - PAL 60GB (still on sale) or PAL 20GB (if you can find one) is your only choice.

the 60gb DOES play ps2 and ps1 gmes BUT you need to buy a usb ps2 to ps3 controller cable so you can use the ps2 controller on the ps3 also a memory card adaptor so you can use our old ps2 memory card so thats another £30 for the 2 accosories... so in the long run just keep the ps2 console (to play his games on) and buy him the 40gb Ps3 instead as 40gb is more than enough space for anyone.

Yes it does play PS2 games. Not all of them work and (like the XBOX360) there are more and more games being supported. It's not fantastic though - I've found quite a few older games to be 'jerkey'
If you still have a PS2 keep, right next to the PS3, and get the cheaper one.

hmm i read that the new 40gb version isnt backwards compatible with PS2 games, hence its so cheap and also because of the lower Hard drive.
read this from Sony.
