I haven't seen any homeless people running around with laptops when I drive through town, but I'm sure somewhere in the US there is a homeless person with a laptop - I just haven't met any on-line.

Well, I became homeless about a week ago, difficult situation
Let's say the new owner of my apartment building found a legal
loophole to get me out.
Someone turned the 2 attics into an apartment 18 years ago
without asking for planning permission, I could not know this as
I've only lived there for about 8 years.
The new owner found out, wanted to renovate and about triple the rent. Officially I was living in a storage room....which is illegal.
So out on the street I went, but I took my laptop with me.
I'm recharging it now over a cuppa coffee in a cafe with free wireless.
I've done some investigation so far about the homeless and
the internet, many shelters ( In Amsterdam ) have 1 or 2 computers available and actively encourage the homeless
to get a free E-mail address on www.daklozenmail.nl so they
can be reached in some way.
At the public library there are computers available for an hour
and a half for free each day.
One of the Amsterdam neighborhoods has started an initiative where the poor and homeless can get internet access for very little money in about 12 locations.
About a dollar would get you on line for an hour and a half
Coffee, tea and Soup are about 30 dollarcents each.
www.buurtonline.info.

There even is a 'computer club for the homeless where they
can acquire some computer skills,at virtually no costs.
www.scipacc.nl.
Especially when homeless, access to a computer is a big advantage, to look for help...get news....and for job applications.
So if you have a laptop and become homeless, hang on to it
for dear life, it prevents a lot of social isolation if used wisely.

I was homeless only once. When my wife and I broke up. I lived out of my van for about 2 weeks until I could get enough money together for a room somewhere.

I'm sure if they're homeless they wouldn't be online at a library, they'd probably have more important things to do, such as find out where their next meal will be coming from!

I have two friends that are. They live wherever they can and she just got a job using my address. My cousin was homless until a proper diagnoses, which he was able to discover on the internet free at the library.
A few of the shelters in PDX have them.
I have found that where there is a will....

Ask this question during daylight hours when the homeless have access to free computers.

I just signed on, but I wonder what assumptions you have about homeless people? Are their answers dumb perhaps?
