Because they Catholics like to think they are being "discreet" by using the confessional booth. Problem is, both the Catholics and those who confess in front of the whole world on Jerry Springer are disobeying a direct command from God to NOT make their confessions public; by telling the priest what you have done, you not keeping it between only you and your God. Look it up in Matthew, Chapters 5-7.

I ask you that you may believe that Jesus is the Saviour of us all, and we cannot be saved or go to heaven through some other way. For Jesus is the Only way,the truth and the life.

I say to you accept Christ as your saviour and you will know what real life is.

John 3:16 "For God loved us all so much that he gave his only son, so that whosoever believes in him might not perish ,but have eternal life."

Because we're confessing our sins to a priest who forgives us in Christ's name. The sins are kept between the priest and the penitent. We are ashamed of our sins, but not everybody needs to know exactly what we did; it's non of anybody else's business. About the fundamentalists...that's called televangelism.

A person's sins is nobody's business except for the sinner, the clergyman who hears the confession and God who forgives the trangressions of the sinner.

lol @ Springer, but confession to a priest is optional. The preferred method is public confession. Shame is a powerful tool for self-realization. It aims to train one to avoid denial, and take responsibility for one's own actions.

The tradition of confession comes from the Biblical verse which says "let us confess our sins to one another"

shame. confessing sins seems like a private thing to do. but that's just an agnostic's point of view. besides you should always respect a person's privacy and space.

Because it's confidential. They do it that way. I think it's about being ashamed of the sins, not flaunting it and showing off the whole world the sins committed. Its ethics.
