Save yourself & him the play of the heart & the headache.
If you don't want to be in the relationship anymore, just tell him. It is more adult than playing games.
He will respect you more in the long run than if you play childish games like these with him.

just tell him that you want out of the relationship...its not fair to keep him dangling and believing in the relationship when you are not in it anymore...besides there's no easy way of breaking up with somebody...no matter how nicely you put it or how bad you make it seem...he's likely to get hurt especially if he cares a lot about you...
