You cannot use the toxic flea powders, drops and sprays on moma cats untill the kittens are weened(about six to nine weeks).
Peperment oil is toxic to the fleas as is lemon grass , ceder wood and many others.
A pad or pillow with ceder chips should work well. as the peperment oil might be too strong for kittens.

Certainly doesn't kill them, and I doubt it'll stop them when there's nice tender kittens to feed on I'm afraid!
Yes do use Frontline on the cats, but it will need to be the spray version for anyone under 8 weeks of age.
There are sprays you can get for the house that work, but you can only get the ones that work from vets. If you have a problem using chemicals, ask a vet to order some Skoosh for you, it's a silicone spray that kills flea mechanically not chemically - no pesticides involved! It's a new product so you might not be able to find a vet who stocks it yet, but they can order it for you.
Lastly, indoor cats still get fleas, they don't need to go outside to get them.

Effective at eliminating odours, including bad breath, peppermint is also excellent against mosquitos and fleas. I add a tissue, or cotton wool pad, soaked in peppermint oil to my hoover to prevent flea infestations and to make the room smell nice - and the cats love the smell of peppermint too! Add a few drops of the oil to a mild shampoo, or make up a rinse of peppermint water to treat infestation of fleas on your cats or dogs. Other oils which are good for treating fleas are lavender and tea tree.
I have attached some links that can help you with your question
I hope this helps
Good luck

Fleas live up to 12 months. they can have billions of offspring in that time all in your carpet. so bath the cats, get a spray from your vet and do lots of vaccuuming. change the bag every time . If you wear white socks you can sometimes see the fleas jumping on your socks. I lived in two houses where we had to fumigate the fleas.

http://www.fidos.com/fidos.html these guys sell flea shampoos that you can use on kittens that are a couple of days old, it works, its safe and it smells nice! for out side fleas, throw garden lime anywhere the cats tend to lay, it wont hurt them or the lawn or the plants, but it suffocates the fleas, inside you can get flea bombs etc, they're nasty lil critters to get rid of

You can wash the kittens with Dawn dish soap. I don't think you can use any flea products on the mom until she is no longer nursing. Consult your vet.
