that turns a forum about travel into a mini global hidepark for politics, mud slinging and soapboxing?

what i mean is, how come instead of getting travel tips, asking about sites, about what to see, etc. people seem to be discussing politics, news etc.

A very good question indeed. When I came to this forum about a year ago there were very few folks but I asked my travel questions anyway.
It did not take long before there was one after another of folks who would register just for a day in order to trash anything about Israel and it always ended up political. I eventually left this forum because all attempts to get resolution did not work.
Anyone who favored Israel was reported and the way that system worked back then--reports generated meant automatic guilt with no recourse.
I have just came back with the hope things would be better but already I see an entire thread is missing.
However, this is not a problem for just this forum. Anywhere there is a forum exclusive to Israel will find those that crash it with anything negative.
I can only speak for myself but as someone who has been to Israel and loves Israel it is hard not to respond to false political statements even though I do try.
Tiny Israel is the focus of the world and will continue to be and I suppose thats why a travel forum can not remain just that. It is inevitable that questions of travel will garner some current events as people wonder about safty etc...
The rest is an anti-Israel/Jew internet wide agenda.

The reason is that so many Arabs wish that the state of Israel would just disappear.
A story would help explain. The Prime Minister of Israel sits down with the dead terrorist Arafat at the beginning of negotiations regarding the resolution of the conflict. The Prime Minister requests that he be allowed to begin with a story. Arafat replies, "Of course."
The Prime Minister begins his story: "Years before the Israelites came to the Promised Land and settled here, Moses led them for 40 years through the desert. The Israelites began complaining that they were thirsty and, lo and behold, a miracle occurred and a stream appeared before them. They drank their fill and then decided to take advantage of the stream to do some bathing--including Moses. When Moses came out of the water, he found that all his clothing was missing.
"Who took my clothes?" Moses asked those around him.
"It was the Palestinians," replied the Israelites--"
"Wait a minute," objected Arafat immediately, "there were no Palestinians during the time of Moses!"
"All right," replies the Prime Minister, "Now that we've got that settled, let's begin our negotiations."

We asked all the questions about travel. Now it's time to discuss more serious issues about Israel and this is the place to do it.

because Israel is a place where a lot is going on and people are curious and interested and want to ask and to know...
sadly there are many that hate Israel and use this forum to spread more lies and a lot of BS
if you have any question about Israel sites and places you can ask :)

Good point!!!
Sadly, the general anti-Israel sentiment in the Arab world has led all-too-many to use any forum, tool or method to continue to spread their venom.
But ... if you're interested in travelling here, gimme a shout.. I'll try to free up some time to show you, or at least direct you to some great sites!

I blame it on a general jealousy of superiority of bagels as a breakfast food over other choices. Since everyone really acknowledges this reality and it is known world over that it was Jews in America that came up with the bagel - the only logical thing these nitwits can think of is attacking the existence of the Jewish Homeland. By doing this they feel they eliminate this culture from existing and someday hope to claim the existence of the bagel as being their own food.
Good Luck!!!
FYI - yes for those interested I am really only kidding here.
The topic of the state of Israel is a controversial subject for many people because in many cases these people like to think of themselves as logical rational being - however, they have been brought up with a bias attitude towards Jews and this form allows them a place to state them. The issue of the Palestinian for many of them they feel gives them legitimacy is branding Jews as evil in their mind. However, so they don't seem like Nazis they can say "we (or I) don't hate Jews, we hate Zionists" which they really mean the same thing, but it helps them sleep better at night. So a harmless site about travel to Israel because a forum for mudslinging and general stupidity. I know I am simplifying things here - but do you really want me to go on and on about this?
Take Care

To be honest, I think that America is probably discussed with the same terms in other countries.
Israel is and probably will always be just a focal point for things.

To Mike you can seperate zionism and judaism because they are contradictory to each other in some sense but you cant seperate jews and zionism, which obviously go hand in hand.
To say" i hate Zionists" is perhaps anti semitic it depends but if isay "i hate zionism" or "what zionism" has done is not anti semitic at all.
