Many of the dogs from most breeds are great with kids. We have had Labs, Chihuahuas, Poms, Poodles, Boston terries, Pugs, Dobermans, Doxies, GSD's , Queensland heeler, Australian shepherd, Blk/Tan coon hound, Redbone hounds, Great Dane, Wolfdog, Springer Spaniel, Cockers, Pekes, Great Pyrenees, and Afghan hounds, ( plus many mixed breeds) that were all good with kids. The only one that harmed a child was a pit bull. And, I know that most pits are great with kids, but ours was not.
Oh, a springer bit me when I was a kid.
It just depends on the character and upbringing of the dog, from nearly any breed.

Speaking as a mother, I would not have a pitbull or rottweiler or any of the breeds that have dicey reputations, whether justified or not. And it's for this simple reason, there will be very protective parents who will not alllow there children to play at your home. It won't matter how well-behaved the dog is. As for the small dog v. large dog debate, I personally believe that has a lot to do with personal preference. I was attacked by my own Irish Setter when I was a teenager, and I was bitten by a Chihuahua as a child. Any dog can turn. The way I look at it, a small dog will do less damage. I've had large and small dogs throughout my life and I love both. The more important question, I think, is how good are your children with dogs. If your children are respectful of the dog, many breeds can be great, especially if raised from puppyhood with the children. I currently own a purebred Havanese that has grown up with my kids, and a Shihtzu that we adopted friom a rescue as a 3 year old. Both are good with my kids, but the Havanese is definitelyy more tolerant. The absolute sweetest dog I've ever had was a stray, black labrador retriever. Hope this helps and that I haven't offended anyone.

In general, larger dogs are better with kids than smaller dogs.
Pit bulls are very good around kids. They just have a bad reputation because of the few that have been abused/neglected and forced to fight. They are very loyal.
Small dogs usually don't do well with very small children, as smaller dogs are usually quicker to use their teeth, and can be hurt accidently if the child plays too rough. Babies don't know not to grab fur, ears, tails, and smaller dogs are less tolerant of this.
Small dogs are fine around children who are old enough to understand to respect the dog.
Some shepherds will try to herd small children around, as they are bred to herd things that move.

There is no breed of dog that is 100% safe with children. What makes the most difference is how you socialize your dog with childeren and keep the dog safe from the kids and the kids safe with the dog. Prevention and common sense and the best ways to keep kids safe with dogs. Training plays a very important role as well.
Breeds I would not recommend: Working line Rotties, GSDs, Dobes, ect. Any Northern/husky types, toy breeds, cocker spaniels, Dachshunds.

My top picks are labrador and golden retrievers. Amazingly good with kids.
Ive been around labs all my life, and I own one now.. or she owns me, take your pick. x)
Anyway, I can vividly remember how loyal and loving the lab I had when I was little was. We lived in an open field, right off the road, and anytime I would try to get close to the road.. she would literaly sit on me and wouldnt let me up!! I would scream for my mom, and you know what she said?! GOOD. you know your not allowed up near that street.
If you are thinking of a dog, I urge you to do research on these two fine creatures, although others are good with kids too, these two are my favorites. And they are both so smart. The advantage with labs for me is they have shorter hair so their easier to groom. Goldens have a long coat.
Good luck!! :D

NOT Chiuahuahs. I happen to have 2 and they do not like children. I can't speak for every chihuahuaha out there, but we have lots of chi books and it even says they aren't the best with kids. My aunt has a chi and has 2 little boys and has said she feels like giving it away because it clashes with children. Bigger dogs are good with kids. Border collies are great with kids, but they have high energy and always want to play play play, so it could be a good thing. good luck!

I had a black lab as a kid, and he was the sweetest dog. I wasn't super mean to him, but I would try to ride on him. He would just roll over and lick my face. They are the nicest breed. They do get big, but they are protective and are quick to understand their place. Which is in the family, but to protect as well.
