As you can see by the answers... It's largely a matter of personal preference.
My brother had back surgery and raves about how much his Tempurpedic has helped him. His wife loves it too.
The Tempurpedic materials, construction and warranty are all first-rate. I bought a mattress topper that seemed good for awhile, but soon lost all of it's memory foam characteristics and was just like any other piece of foam rubber. There may be some cheaper knock-off brands out there that are good, but there are some terrible ones too and you'd be taking your chances. There's an old saying "cheap pays twice" and I've found it to be true more often than not...
You might be perfectly happy with any new high-quality pillowtop mattress with a high coil count and good warranty for less than what a memory foam mattress costs...

I know its too late for the original person asking the question, but for those reading this now. There are many non-Tempurpedic companies in the US. The one I like is Bragada. They have very similar mattress to Tempurpedic, but at a MUCH lower price

The Tempurpedic is about 8" thick and, as you say, quite expensive. It is good but you only sink into it a maximum of about two inches. Thus, getting a mattress pad made of the same material and greater than 2" in thickness, to supplement an ordinary mattress, will do the same job for a small fraction of the cost ( about 1/10).

there are some company's out there that sell products like tempurpedic but its the density of the foam that is the big difference in the products.
I bought the Cal-King Temp. but before I did went and looked at the others and that is where I found the quality was higher with Temp. and the density better.
The others when you sat on them, like on the sides, you could feel yourself sinking much faster and took longer for foam to return shape.
Temp. does make 2 types mattress, one which does look just like a big piece of foam and the other look like a regular matters, foam is inside a type on lining with a pillow top, also there are different thickness two all depends on what feels best to you.
We have had our almost a yr now and love it, talked my dad into buying one also, hes 70 says its best thing hes ever sleep on, we all have back problems and this has been great for them, also I do not disturb my husband getting in/out of bed anymore, added bonus.

I have a posture firm bed by King Koil and it has a memory foam top and makes my back feel wonderful! That with the foundation...good stuff! I got the set for like around 1200 dollars on sale at Home Furniture a couple years back. Mine is a queen at that.

I have one and I cant give it away....its like laying on wet sand...and for some reason, people dont move when they are sleeping on one (I pawned it off on family members) so you wake up all stiff...worse than when you went to bed....
if you want to try one, there are certainly cheaper versions at practically every matress specialty store.....like, 25% of that price.
